What's On Your Workdesk? Wednesday 144

The hot news is not about my desk this week.  Although as you can see, it's a bit more orderly. I've taken the shot from the right edge of my desk because the sun was low and bright and a 'full frontal' pic would have been a glare.  I'm making preparations to send out the WOYWW badges, so don' forget to email your post address if you want one.

So this week's burning issue is WORD VERIFICATION.  Oh my.  Since blogger changed to the 'captcha' type of wobbly fonts in bubbles, it's caused no end of difficulties for WOYWWers, several have been moved to email me and ask that if you show your desk, please, turn off the Word Verification.  It is my opinion that Comment Moderation is a more successful way of avoiding unwanted comments/spam, 'specially since Blogger's new Spam filter seems to be a strong one.  But that's my opinion.  It's not a rule of WOYWW, but there's no doubt that the person trying to comment probably won't try more than once.  If you want to turn off WV and can't, please ask for help...loads of us know how.  And there's no such thing as a stupid question is there, it's just something you don't know the answer to.  Here's another opinion - why can't they just spell it 'capture'...now that's the sort of thing that really annoys me.
Come on then, take five and show us your desk..we wanna see what you're working on and what you've got. Link here and leave a comment if you dare. There's a cyber WOYWW button in the top left margin if you'd like to add one to your blog.

A cyber WOYWW button...very Doctor Who! Thanks for the words on WV - it had indeed gone doo-lally and is literally a head-tilting turn off. I see badges, I see badges...! And yummy flags...you're in Olympic form already!

Doh! I totally forgot to ask on Saturday if you had the buttons! And yep, WV stinks. It's not that I can't read it, it just will not accept it. Oh well, I just read and move on....

Happy WOYWW

Happy WOYWW to you Julia! There may be no such thing as dumb questions but apparently there are smart answers - when I read about the WOYWW badges previously (sleep deprived no doubt) I thought you meant new ones for our blogs - had no idea until today that you meant REAL PHYSICAL BADGES for us to bear! SO yes do count me in! I will shoot you my address in a bit!

Now re: Captchas - yes, peeps, PLEASE turn them OFF and either moderate your comments or let your site do it for you! In addition to being annoying and time consuming (esp for those of us who visit tons of blogs) - it is just about IMPOSSIBLE to decipher for any of us who are older or in any way vision impaired! The DISQUIS ones with the bubbles are the absolute worst! I know that the Blogger catches spam REALLY well - I hardly ever had any while I was on there! On WordPress I use just good old plain Akismet and moderate (otherwise I'd never get to read them) and it does a marvelous job - it has NEVER let a single spam comment slip through the cracks and has caught THOUSANDS of spam comments on my blog (HUGE increase in spam since moving over - BUT Akismet and the spam catchers work!) Moderation DOES help you catch the few false positives which DO end up in there every now and then!

Well...I guess you opened a can of worms - I'm sure everyone will have an opinion on this! But - in the meantime - lovely desk and I am now very excited about the badge project!

Happy WOYWW to you!

Ramona

I think if people take the trouble to comment they don't want to jump hoops. I have never had a mean comment in 3 years of blogging! Most people are nice.

Hi Julia, I am back for the 3rd time and I think that I am hooked. Your desk is so neat today, are you making for buttons. How can I get one?

Argh! I can't seem to email you from your blog, it comes up with an outlook thingy and I don't have outlook. This is my email, can you send me an email so that I can give you my address, vonnykaus@yahoo.com.au

I had the word verification on my comments and didn't even know it. Bridget let me know and helped me to get rid of it. So if people encounter the wv, maybe they should let the blogger know as they might not know it's there, like me.
For the record, I hate it too.
Have a great week and I would really love a badge, let me know how much the postage is.

My goodness you've been hard at work. Your desk is so organized. I love it when mine is...sadly it doesn't stay that way long. I'm so glad you talked about word verification. Thanks for the new WOYWW button. Have a great week.

Yay, badges, I love a badge and this one is great - will wear it with pride. Have already sent you my address but needed two emails to do it as I left it off the first one - what a dope.
I had WV and didn't even know until it was pointed out, think Blogger puts it on automatically and you have to turn it off.
I'm 59 this week, well not in life but in the WOYWW list. If it was in life then you would have invented the ultimate in time travel - 26 one week, then 63, up to 70 and back to 59. Can't you arrange to send me back to 21 so that I can revisit that birthday party I was too tipsy to remember?

Oooh badges, might just have to email you about one. Thanks for providing not only them but the gateway to snoop!

Hi Julia. I did email begging for a badge last week, also about something you have for sale, I guess you've been swamped though which is perhaps why no reply? Also, you did comment on my blog about a HC meeting (Yess!!! Indeedy!!) so I guess you know how close I live - so perhaps the email got through. Took me a long way of getting round to saying that!

I hate the new (and old) WV with a vengeance too.

And, at what time are people poised to post their WOYWW these days? Yikes, I'm down at 87 at least!

I took off word verification a few weeks ago because of the changes blogger made, but am still bummed about it. The point is: if you want to receive your comments in the mail, you also get the spam. It may now show up on your blog, but it does show up in your mailbox. So now I have turned the mailing of comments off too that way at least I don't have to deal with the spam. But I do miss getting the comments in my mailbox and hate having to go to blogger to see if anyone commented on my posts. I hope blogger will soon find a way to only post the 'real' comments on the mail and keep the spammers far away from us.

Thanks for putting up the piece about the WV as I am so with you on that one, it drives me nuts! A great desk this week Julia, love the angle and is it my imagination or have you had a tidy up??

I just had to do another posting, because you are never going to see my studio this tidy again. Seemed a shame to waste it.

Every day technology is changing. I hope that in my spare time from creating and being a housewife, I can keep up with it all! Have a fabulous Wednesday and a Word-impressing Week!

Finally took the word verification thingy off my blog too after one lovely visitor told me that it took her four attempts to leave a comment. Thankfully she stuck with it until successful.....most people would have given up for sure.

Thanks for your visit today and your encouragement. As you may have seen by now, I ended up contacting Barbara Gray direct and asking her, as it was her show that made me try it. She answered me very quickly and it seems that it should have been Perfect Pearls (which have a binder in) rather than the cheap mica powders I was using. I would like to ask on e question. is there any way to join into Mr Linky in a scheduled manner. I am usually still up at the time it goes live, but not always, and I would like to continue even when we are away on holiday. Have a good week. xx Maggie #8

yep, totally agree about WV it's a pain in the bum.
I'm thinking of not bothering to leave comments anymore, I trouble reading anything 'small' anyway if it is fuzzy I dont stand a chance
I hope you have a lot of stamps for the badges.

My first link up to WOYWW....love this! Following you now and I hope to remember to be here every Wednesday!

I'm so glad it isn't just me that hates the new verification system in place. I already wear magnifiers and for the life of me, I can never get the code right the first time around. Whew. That's a relief. Nothing should impede our right to joy through the snooping of workspaces! *smile*

My first WOYWW for a while, hope to be a regular from now on. Those badges look wonderful:)

The badges look wonderful I must email you!

Another agreeing about WV. I turned it off on my blog a year ago and have had no problems. I find increasingly that I can't read the silly things - maybe I need an eye test.

PS, missing the ladder!

Ooohh badges!!! Don't they look fab!?!?!?! I will send you my addy after I've done this.
I must admit, the verification has been getting on my nerves lately so other people must be getting fed up with mine too! As several people have commented on here that they haven't had problems without it on, I will turn mine off too!
Happy WOYWW everyone!!

Love the badges. I got rid of WV last week after a kind WOYWW told me it was on. I hate the thing too. I will email for a badge.
Happy WOYWW

Yes!! (My novel...) if put together is about 5 inches thick, so yes...I can lose a few papers (they are discarded ones) punches were left out from a card/cards I made earlier...they do get put away but I keep using the same ones. and I keep hold of the Babycham because it still bears the name of my old employers and I miss their dogs! ...and the chickens...and the cats..... and...they had a HUGE pot of Nuttella...

I didn't get a picture up today, but just wanted to say I enjoy your take on the whole word verification thing. I've turned it off on mine because there are other weekly blogs I sometimes submit to that have flat out stated their design team will not comment on entries who still have word verification. It can be a royal pain in the you-know-what! Have a great rest of the week!!

Ooh, I want to see the British Flag plaque-thingy you have on your window/door handles.
Your desk is looking very neat this week but still at the ready for your next flurry of activity!

I enjoyed seeing your desk this week. I love looking at all of the bits and pieces on everyones desk. The bottle of liquid pledge on my desk is for glittering the inside of glass ornaments. That was the smallest bottle I could find. I think it is used for linoleum floors.

Lovely badges! And to paraphrase Blazing Saddles, We so need some gorgeous badges!

Your desk looks well prepared for the Jubilee! Happy (belated) WOYWW!

I feel like an idiot! I thought that I had turned off the WV, and didn't know I hadn't until one of the lovely ladies told me. I hope I've fixed it now.. SO sorry about that everyone!
