What’s On Your Workdesk? wednesday 679

I’m not posting a photo of my desk this Wednesday; it’s a dumping ground for quite a lot of new stash I’ve just bought. Haven’t even taken it out of the bag. So much going on! The slabs for the patio have finally arrived, and so we decided to model all the ideas we’d had before committing. It’s been rather like doing a jigsaw without colour!
So all those pieces represent the slabs at whatever scale the board needs them to be. The house is the big chunk of space extending from the bottom of the pic. So the patio shape is bizarre.
Mr Dunnit wants it to look random. But random just doesn’t work, and after wasting his lunch hour on it, we agreed it needed to have a regular patttern, so I turned his head by looking at Pinterest.
And in full sight of the real thing, we laid out our plan. Turns out we’re going to have do quite a lot of cutting, and we’ve got a lot of genuine labouring to do before we break out the new slabs, but it’s all starting to happen. Which is more than can be said about desk activity, huh!

Please show and tell about your desk week, it’s a welcome diversion from concrete and paving slabs!

  2. Love the extra look of the desk today. Just wondering how long it took to cut all those pieces of wood for the model - such a shame that you can't work it out but as what it ends up as I bet it looks lovely. Sounds as if there is a lot of work ahead - love how you are helping.
Good luck and don't overstretch, either of you, take rests.

  3. Great planning Julia - I like the pattern you have come up with. I am sure all the hard labour will be worth it once you can enjoy a drink on the finished patio and hopefully no one will end up underneath it lol. Stay safe and Happy WOYWW. Sarah #4

  4. Just having a lazy morning here. Loving the look of your slabs so far. I think the problem is the brain will try to create a pattern even if one doesn't exist. So better to create and actual pattern from the go. One thought, probably too late at this point, would be to look at QUILT patterns. They often are made up of ...iterations? Not sure what the right word is but squares, then 1/4 or 1/2 squares, etc so all the pieces fit together. In fact, your patio pattern would make a lovely quilt...
    Happy desk hop day!

  8. Slab patterns . . .ugh! Well done for sorting it though . . .
I would say have a good week but it will be hard, early mornings are best in my opinion then lazing around in the heat can be enjoyed as you survey work done earlier. Just saying . . .

  10. Isn’t it 680 today? I’m still all at sea following the four day Jubilee weekend - what day is it? Who are you again? Random is so hard to do, I find it almost impossible but then I am a neat freak. Good luck shifting slabs in this week’s hot weather!

  11. That's a fantastic idea for working out the pattern. I am sure the hard labour will be worth it and before you know it you'll be relaxing on your new patio, drink in hand, enjoying the summer weather!
Hope you have a lovely week,

  12. I must admit I was waiting for #680 and thought the scheduling was playing up again. Never mind. Good luck with your patio planning. I’d think the less cutting the better as those materials can I imagine, break unexpectedly and quite easily?
    Take care and happy WOYWW

  13. Good morning Julia. Your craft room sees a lot of changes! Are those pieces of wood going to end up as wonderful art one day? Laying slabs seems a lot of work, but you will be pleased with it when done and relaxing with a G & T or in my case, a cup of tea! Have a great week, Angela #11

  16. Rather late to the party but was determined as I'd made a birthday card! Yes ONE!!! A bit confused to the numbering and thought the heat had finally got to me but Jan questioned it too, phew not just me then.... Love the planning. I probably would have used paper myself, each to their own. BJ#21

  17. Hi Julie. Sorry I'm late with my response. I was about to and life had a different idea :-(
All well now, well sort of.
I have to admit I don't envy you the laying of the patio but sure it will look fabulous. Anne x 19

  18. Oh my goodness... that's quite a task you got there on your hands! Good luck with that patio, and don't stand/work too much in the sun (it is hot and sunny overhere, how is it at your place? Wear a hat!) Love from Holland, Marit #3

  19. Well that pattern looks great to me and if I remember correctly from my garden design days, a truly random pattern is difficult to achieve and most slab sizes are designed to work with each other - if you lay enough of them eventually your pattern will repeat! Unless of course it's crazy paving...... Also a bit of a eureka moment - whyever didn't I have little pieces of 'slab' to move around when I needed it - doh!! Probably becaus landscapers will do what they will.... Have a good week, Love n hugs Cindy xx

  20. What a great idea to use bits of cut out pieces. Random, doesn't really work. Have some kind of style,, design shape, whatever! And don't forget to show us when it's done! Not joined in last/this WOYWW as away. And no internet unless I tramped across a field with my laptop etc to the club house... which I'd done before, but some giant mouse was practicing that evenings routine. I'd love to join the crop, but its a bit too far for me.
    Have a great week ((Lyn))
