What's on Your Workdesk? Wednesday 195

subtitle:  Is this the most boring desk in Britain?  Even as a twofer?

Actually, it may not be..at least I achieved something by doing the accounts and getting ready for month end blah blah.
But be warned my friends, I have found the most boring craft occupation in THE WORLD

Yep. rolling my ribbon collection onto dolly pegs.  It's mind numbingly boring, even with a play on the radio and a cuppa.  I can see this being short bursts of activity over many many days.  On the bright side, I have already found ribbon lengths that I didn't know I had.  Most of the ral craft work is taking place elsewhere this week - I'm about one third of the way through a quilt for Jan and Jo's scheme and am working up some crochet from my armchair.  Neither of which I'm going to photograph until they both look like something.  You know what I mean!
I've created two pages this week, find them in the top left margin will ya - about the WOYWW crop and the Anniversary  (yeah, WOYWW4!).
Meanwhile please, spark my desk interest back to life - show me what you're up to in your craft space; put WOYWW in the post tile, load a photo onto your blog, turn off word verification if you can and link here.  Easy.  Be reciprocal in your visiting people, at least!

Will be nice when you have it finished. And I like your term Dolly Pegs. Haven't heard that before. Happy WOYWW

  7. Wow... I saw the ribbons in an earlier post, but not in context - that ribbon pot is HUGE!!! *lol*
Don't think of ribbon winding as boring, think of it as therapuetic (put some music on, have a relaxing time) and a voyage of discovery for all those ribbon pieces lost in that ma-hoo-sive jar! *lol*
Have a wonderful Wednesday Julia :)

  9. I couldn't imagine! I wrapped a wreath once in yarn and thought I'd die from the boredom of it, lots of drudgery...yet now I love it, and so will you once it's all wrapped and organized. Keep calm and wrap on! waving hi from the hills of North Carolina ♥

  10. I have to ask what you do with the dolly pegs when you have wound the ribbon onto then. Where do you store them? Does it mean the demise of the beloved ribbon jar? We shall miss that. Have a wonderful week of winding, sewing and crocheting. xx Maggie #15

  24. Howdy Julia,

    Good luck with those ribbons.

I gave up trying to find a system for my ribbon a few years ago. For my purposes, as soon as I bring my ribbon purchases home, I just cut lengths from each spool 6" or 12" long. Then I store the cut strips by color family in large gallon ziploc bags.

It was driving me crazy to find a storage//travel system that worked for my purposes.

Would love for you to visit my blog when you have a moment or 2. This week I have a freebie tutorial!

    Peace,

  27. Hi Julia
So you don't see sorting your ribbon as real craft, just think how pleased you will be when working on a project you are able to lay your hands on that piece of ribbon needed without a problem.
Also all your ribbons are going to look so pretty on those pegs.
A job well done I say
Happy WOYWW hope you have a great day

  32. oddly when I find a task boring (and have managed to avoid doing it until it just HAS to be done) when I actually do do it, I daydream and find it deeply relaxing, and they do look pretty on your desk, and you will liek the end result, and if you need help why not invite round suckers (ooops friends) and have a dolly winding party?

Comment for the 'boring desk' -

I find even with the guide I can never hole punch two pages in the same place...I think I may be defective....

  35. Hi Julia
I don't know about boring but annoying I can do. Putting threads onto a spool then dropping it on the floor and it all unravels or dropping your tin of sorted buttons or the bottom falling of the hole punch and the bits going everywhere. You get the picture.
How do you secure the end of the ribbon once you've finished putting it on and where will you then store them.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh my, that's a lot of rolling and a lot of pegs needed, but these things have got to be done. I didn't get round to everyone last week, I will try to do better this week!

  39. Your ribbon is going to look great. I'm working on getting all the ribbon i bought at the thrift shop sorted. it is sitting in a huge heap on the right side of my desk...just out of camera angle...I'm saving it for next week or my post would have been too long.

  40. Goodness, you've more patience than me with that ribbon rolling, Julia. I think I would have given up on that by now, well done for sticking at it.

  41. O M Goodness, I now want to get out all my ribbons and dive into them! Roll in them! Jump on them and then...by that time, men in white coats will appear.. I have most of mine in jars, but they get tangled, and then need ironing, which is about the only thing I iron, (poor hubby) Other peoples piles of stuff always look soooo much nicer. Happy Wednesday!! I was 72, but by the time I've typed all this out I'll probably be 109

  44. Morning from one one of your nutty followers!!
Poor you having to do accounts, certainly one thing I don't miss about working for myself. I thought about using pegs for ribbon but find my big deep drawer works betterthan any ther system I'vetried so far. But I may still resort to using pegs for the random bits which are always getting tangled. I'll just remember not to start that job when I haveotherthings to do!! Good Luck..

  50. Ah, the accounts ... a necessary evil! In my working days, days I no longer yearn for, I sorted out too many carrier bags of invoices to number ... your way of catching up monthly is infinitely preferable. I so wished my clients were as disciplined.

Having just spent far too many of the precious hours left to me on this mortal coil sorting out my ribbon hoard, I have got to agree that it is a boring - probably the most boring - occupation, albeit worthwhile. And one of the real benefits was discovering those forgotten beauties and the prospect that when a certain colour, width and texture is required, it can be found in a moment :))

Happy WOYWW, Elizabeth x - this week a shameful #79

  51. Operation Ribbon seems to be going well - there seems to be a lot of delicious looking ribbon in your stash. I am currently not purchasing anything - other than card stock which you can't do without so that I use up the stuff I have - by the look of the desks and craft rooms we all have a huge amount of stuff and can't resist buying more... I am sure us crafters are keeping the economy going LOL.

Good work with the accounts !

Not taken any photos of my workspace, there isn't anything on it (being a tidy freak), hopefully I will do something nice on it tonight if I get home from the business a bit earlier than we have been doing.....If not will enjoy looking at everyone elses.

Still they will look very decorative once you have finished. My task from hell is cleaning all my stamps and sorting them back into their original boxes, tend to give up, throw them in any-old-how and complain like mad when I can't find the ones I need later.

  107. The ribbon definitely looks neat and tidy on the clothespins -- this should make it easier to see what you have. Last year I took all my ribbon off the spools and stuck it in a jar simply because I wanted to free up a drawer. Now it's a mess and I can't see what I have. Ha, ha Hope you're having a lovely day. I'll link up to Mr. Linky when he decides to return from hiatus.:) ~ Laura (http://bookworm.typepad.com/lens/2013/02/woyww-195-3-cards-and-a-tag.html)

  108. I find those sort of tasks oddly therapeutic but then I am slightly OCD :)

I can't seem to get the linky to load when I come to your blog this week.

Here's my little post anyway - I'll check back later and see if I get lucky!

Ribbon rolling may not be the most inspiring activity, but think how wonderfully organised you'll be when it's done! xxx Keren

  111. Accounts ... I'm very impressed, that's far too sensible and orderly for me! Really admire your patience with the ribbons too, it's a constant dilemma on how to store such things so they are neat and tidy, but also accessible! Sounds like the clothes pins are just the job. Thanks for hosting and have a great week.

  114. There's no way for me to link in. :( Mr Linky is not showing.

  115. Oh, I can sympathize with the ribbon project. I did all mine, plus the ones I inherited from my mil AND my grandmother. It took for-evah, but was well worth it.

This is the first time I've done WOYWW since November and the linky is missing. Bummer!

My link is http://keepsakecrafts.net/blog/2013/02/27/woyww-lotsa-ufos/. I'll check back later.

    Happy creating!

  116. I had my GD wrap my ribbons. It was just too much for me. Trying to get back in the swing of things and there is no linky showing for me either.

  117. Where has Mr linky gone? can't visit any more desks!

  118. This ribbon tidying looks like a big task - but it'll be worth it all in the end - I think I'll stick to the craft mates ribbon boxes - I just buy a new one each time they fill up - they stack up on top of each other - simples!

  133. Believe me Julia, when you can find the exact ribbon you want at the time you want it, you will be glad you undertook the ribbon winding! BTW 20 pegs are only 70p in Wilkinsons at the moment!

  134. Since I've never been to Britain I can't really answer your question, but since I don't see any glitter, buttons or designer paper - I'm going to have to guess - yes. :-) But you redeemed yourself with the ribbon. LOL April #151

  138. There is a lovely lot to do on your table. And this idea to roll the ribbons on the woodden things is very good. A work, certainly to relax.

  139. I have to admit: I wouldn't even start rolling up all these ribbons if they were mine. I really admire you for doing this! And the idea is absolutely brilliant!

Don't drink too much coffee! ;)

  141. I think I am after the last spot! HA. Ribbon rolling, I must find out what you do with the pegs after to roll all of them....I missed that, but knowing you...I doubt if you just throw them into a laundry basket! have a wonderful week,

  143. Well, I think I can sympathise with you this week regarding your dolly pegs. I have started the massive project of getting all of my DMC floss onto stitchbows and into clear pockets in lever arch files. I've just filled up one file so I have to buy another. It's a carthartic process as I can only afford to spend £10 a month on this project. here must still be another hundred or so to go! Keep ging with it:) Lucy #29 x

  144. I have most of my ribbon on those pegs, and I LOVE the ease with which I can find just the wrong color blue or green.

The most I can get on one peg is 5 yards, so I only did the smaller spools of ribbon. It IS a mind-numbing activity, but so worth it!
