Hearts at Home

Apart from the silly acronym, I think the phrase 'how quickly the weeks go by' or something similar is the most written in terms of WOYWW.  And never more so than in December, huh! Honestly, I have hardly spent a minute at home this week.  Well, that's how it feels.  And see my lovely hearts at home bauble above?  NOT a current photo. Haven't even bought the tree, let alone got it in situ and decorated.  I feel that it should be this weekend.  Have done a quick poll of tree sellers and must now spend a half hour or so of skilled but gentle sales talk so that when we get there, Mr Dunnit doesn't pass out at the 2012 prices.  It does his spirit of goodwill no good at all, I can tell you, to find a year on year increase of about 20%.  But what can you do?  We've tried artificial trees and they're lovely.  But they don't save any money because a year later, I'm bored and want a change.  Fickle, aren't I. You'd think after 27 Christmases together, he'd remember, but somehow I manage to dazzle him with my personality throughout the rest of the year so that this day, this fickle-ness, comes as a shock.  Again.  It may of course, be less dazzling personality and more age related forgetfulness, but he's a great good man and after the initial shock, he does not turn the day into one of whining misery by going on and on about the cost of trees or Christmas generally.  He just sucks it up.  And that is a lesson to me.  I'm going to try not to whine about my huge 'to do' list...I'm going to suck it up and get on with it.  Really.  If I do publish a whingey post, you too will know the secret of my marriage:  Mr Dunnit is altogether the bigger person. And that's why my heart stays at home for Christmas.

  1. You do make me laugh Julia :-) I have a feeling most men are the same....I resigned myself to a new artificial one last year so it can be put up early for the munchkins to decorate...a real one just would never last til Christmas :-)

  2. We all feel the pinch this time of year. The pinch of time and money. I've had to scale back on some of the things I'm doing because I can't get it all done anymore. I've been missing in action for WOYWW for several weeks and I don't like it one bit. Slammed my thumb in car door and that has slowed me down. Now I have time to think about the true meaning of the season. So slow down and enjoy and remember to "Breathe".

  3. At least you'll have a tree - Mr D will support you in your choice, stump up the cash and lug it home... hope you enjoy decorating it, and don't forget to show us what it looks like! Much love now and for Christmas. xx

  4. A big ditto from me. The to do list soon becomes a to die list! Put my real tree up last night and am just starting to write my (bought!!!) cards. My hubby faints and grabs his wallet when I start doing my "just a few little extra things" frenzy. But we kinda of love the madness too don't we? Just going to count my blessings and work on the art of savouring the moment (after a whinge). Happy holidays!

  5. Message from Mrs Scrooge... last year the real trees were reduced to £5 in B&Q the week before Christmas. DH wouldn't let me buy one as we already had our old fake tree up and decorated but when we went in to pay for our salt and sand supplies there were also super duper FAKE trees, in the boxes for £5!! We put one in the loft and got it out this year... GORGEOUS! but I do prefer the real thing.
Love from the bestest bargain hunter..

  6. I had a little chuckle at your post, I wonder if all hubbys are the same - in thei end they just resign themselves..... We did think about a real tree for all of 2 minutes when we saw the prices this year, you would think if it was a great year for the growers that they would be cheaper.... We have yet to decide whether to put up ours this year or just all the other hundreds of festive ornaments - does that make me sound a bit Bah Humbug I wonder.... Hugs, Anne x

  8. Now I do not have this hassle with my family every year and we have all learnt that the tree lives in the roof throughout the year so therefore is it living. It might in fact be artificial but it is living in the roof so therfore living, do I make myself clear? yes you now understand. Ha now onto the tree I love my living tree, I cant bear to cut down growing trees so I keep letting mine live in the roof, it is happy there most of the time but and this is the but on the first of december it is itching to get out of the roof and prove to the rest of the family how wonderful it is. We all take turns in picking a colour for the tree each year this year is was white, maybe you need to find yourself a good living tree and just make decoration changes each year.

  9. Ah, the tree debate! Yep, mine is still in the attic and there it will stay unless Mr C gets it down and decorates it!

  10. Well this year is our first every artificial tree. It does look fantastic compared to our previous lopsided, threadbare pines, but I am already trying to figure out how to store it erect until next year, I can't be bothered with having to fit it back in a box! (sorry for the very long absence - I've missed you!)

  11. I'm contemplating a major project where I make my Christmas tree. Won't be real, but could be cool. Are you up for the challenge?

  12. Our problem is not the real tree versus fake but where are we going to put it! In our old house it was easy but now we are in a flat there aren't that many places to put one - hence it's still in its box!! Chrisx

  13. Lovely post, Julia! We do have a Christmas tree since last Sunday, and it has its lights on, but it is not decorated yet. You might think that there should be time for that within a week, right? Hm... At least my daughter got to work and put up the Christmas village today and it looks lovely. I baked the first batch of cookie. Will there be more to follow? Well, I'm not giving up hope and might be surprised at myself...

  15. Several years ago I stopped buying real trees because they were SO expensive. Now I just bring out my artificial and stuffed trees each year. Sort of boring, but I don't have a lovely family to decorate for. Only a cat, and he could care less (grin). In fact, he's probably quite happy, since that means more kibble for him.

But seriously, I think Mr. D. is a man of sweet spirit and a whole lot of love for you. It's good to see such a fun relationship, even though he may be the bigger person when it comes to Christmas whining.

  17. ahh! it is lovely to hear you singing the praises of Mr D. I tried again to persuade the handyman to get a new artificial tree this year... Nah, nothing doing and actually he's right .... nothing wrong with the old one. it has new lights and new decs but basically a tree, is a tree, is a tree. It's the people around it that matter Ahh!

  19. I love real trees, no shame in that. I blame my parents for bringing me up on a nasty spindly silver tinsel one. Taking a blog break so just wanted to stop my and wish you all the blessings of the Season xx
