Oh my word, I've migrated into the conservatory. And oh my word, I'm being the super- mother-of-the-year. Miss Dunnit has been slaving (and I mean slaving) over a costume for MCM Expo this weekend. She has been on a steep learning curve too, because I have been steadfast in my resolve to not interfere and take over. Because I have been stupidly busy and she hasn't. But now she has a job and time is against her. And last night it all went a bit wrong and there was the frustration meltdown and I so utterly know how crushing that is. So on Tuesday afternoon I unpicked and re-jigged one thing and finished another. I forgot how much easier it is when you know how. I also tidied the table and swept the floor before I started...it would seem that Miss Dunnit's method of messy working doesn't suit me. Which is an enormous double standard, wouldn't you say!
So, there's the iPad, I was listening to an afternoon Drama on Radio 4. There's faux leather sleeves and under the needle is faux swede. Yes, Miss Dunnit is going to MCM as a character from Game of Thrones. It's all the rage, you know. Which of course, is why I know very little about it!
I'm fairly sure she's not a reader, but I wanna wish my sister Sally a really Happy Birthday today. Younger than me or not, she's a cracker!
Lastly - had a lot of feedback about the last two cards I've posted; and a lot of questions - I'll answer them tomorrow, it's all simple.

Hubby and I are lopving Game of thrones and watched an episode this evening - only problem is they are too short!! As yet though the Art teacher hasn't had to mark a piece by me so I am managing to keep my hands and opinions to myself - just about - I try to limit myself to techniques only and not do it like this and that and oh what mark did I get!!!! ReplyDeleteAh! Sewing. Like baking, I didn't take to it too well at school and was often rescued myself. I think I would now look at it different and construct like I would something 3d in cardstock or something. Sewing is something I really want to do because I've got some calico - cheap enough to make a mess of.

Julia. DON'T faint. I made bumber 21. I recon it's probably over 2 years since I managed that kind of number. But 21 or 148 (couple of weeks ago) - I'm here as often as I can manage - which is a plus and is as good as being number one in my eyes...

Haven't been in for a few weeks, but thought I needed the therapy!! I couldn't sew for tuppence at school... spent a whole year un picking tacking stitches!! and then one line of machine and... had to unpick that too! They kicked me out and sent me down to the art room in the end... which made me very happy! But!! I did sew my girls dungaree's when they were little, and!! No tacking only pins! and I didn't do too badly...

Love the double standards on tidy crafting! Must admit, as you know, I am not tidy, but when I sew I tend to clean as I go! Can't wait to see Miss D outfit. I have a friend who works many of the sci fi conventions and did Star Trek last weekend in London and says some of the outfits are amazing!

ReplyDeleteHow lovely to have a conservatory...I loved them when we were in England Unfortunately they are not found over here. I would take my coffee into my cousins conservatory in the early morning and just sit and watch the birds in the garden. The house was so still and the garden was alive with activity.

What an ace Mum. I'll always remember the year I was going to bed, about 9pm and turned to my Mum and said "Oh by the way, I need an indian costume for school tomorrow Mum" Hahaha! She did it though, one bed sheet and smoke coming out of the sewing machine later - I don't know how she did it and of course she made two because if I was getting one then little sis wanted one too. Teachers were so impressed I was made to stand up the front of the show we were doing (I wasn't so impressed with that bit!) But when you post about these costumes you do for Miss Dunnit - you always remind me of that!

ReplyDeleteI just had to turn my 9 year old into a spider. As my certificate from Hogwarts hasn't come yet I was forced to sew something out of a grim reaper costume and 4 knee length black socks. I thought I had done quite well, then in the carnival he ended up sat on a float (thought he was walking and only the littlies were riding) and you couldn't see all the extra legs!!!

ReplyDeleteI can say it now, as I wish I could sew, Good for you for letting your daughter at least start the costume...my Mom just couldn't sit and watch my feeble attempts, would throw up her hands, chase me out of the house, and I'd come home to a perfectly finished dress, costume, curtains...( think she was afraid of the repair costs to the old machine! LOL!) And, hmm, I like the look of that room...I really think that that horrid machine should be moved elsewhere, and a craft (as in paper) table should be moved in...just sayin'...

Oh, how I feel for Miss D! Being an avid Trekker who has, in her day, had to run up a couple of sets of Klingon armour and an Arachnia, Queen of the Spider People costume for a convention, I understand her pain..
ReplyDeleteNot linking up today! But came to read your post and probably see a few desks anyways. You remind me of Lynette from DHW Season 1 Ep6 where Lynette meets a new rival, Maisy Gibbons, while pitching in to help with a theatre rendition of Little Red Riding Hood at the twins' new school. Lynette soon discovers that Maisy Gibbons runs the play committee to her own liking, including neutralizing the ending of the play and shoots down Lynette's suggestion to keep the true ending as Lynette is not pulling any "heavy lifting". Lynette decides to take on the task of making costumes for the play in order to have the right to comment on the play's new politically correct ending. The other mothers timidly agree, however now Lynette is swamped by Maisy Gibbons demanding expectations for the costumes. If she does not want her boys to be taken out of the play, the costumes have to be perfect. Lynette soon converses with another hard working mom about taking her child's ADD medicine she will have all the energy she needs, and succeeds in finishing in time as well as putting Maisy Gibbons in her place on opening night. NOT that I advise this LOI!!
ReplyDeleteJulia, Julia, Julia!!! I cannot even begin to tell you how much the BBC Radio 4 Extra rocks my world. I listen live streaming most of the time, but often go back and do the catching up bit where they let you listen to a broadcast for 7 days. I cannot tell you the joy this is for me. I listen while I work. If it's a comedy, the broad smile on my face makes me look like I've gone stupid as I sit working. A drama makes me hold my breath. And there is one show that will stay with me for life. It was one written by a mother whose daughter and boyfriend (Goth) were killed in a park. This was beyond touching...it went straight into my heart...and stayed there...now it is embedded. I love the BBC. You Brits. are a pretty funny bunch, hey? Love, Norma, x

ReplyDeleteAnyway, I got all ambitious with the sewing thing once or twice but I learned my lesson after that--leave the sewing creating to those that know how. So good luck to Miss Dunnit and her sewing endeavors! She is lucky to have you around to save the day!

ReplyDeleteOh boy oh boy do I ever remember the sewing meltdowns when I was younger, scrambling at the last minute, usually late at night....and it ALWAYS goes wrong! lol Moms always step in to help - one day I'll be there too, helping out my daughter! Happy Wednesday to you! *smiles* ~Jen
ReplyDeleteYour sewing dilemma takes me right back to when our daughter was doing projects for school, knitting her own designs etc. It was always left to the last minute so Mum ended up having to help and sort out the mishaps, without actually doing the work. ReplyDeleteAh, yes, the dilemma of how much to let our children do for themselves to "build character" and when to jump into the fray and rescue them. Sounds like you became Superhero Mom at just the right time. Your conservatory space looks nice with lots of light and lots of space to spread out. Hope the costume comes out well. My sister is a fantastic sew mistress and has made costumes etc for drama plus a wedding dress or 2 lol but she always is so messy, you can't get in her sewing room with stuff all over. I thought I would never be like that, but now find when I'm crafting or sewing, I chuck sewing thread, bits of paper etc on the floor, I never thought I would be like that lol. I was just thinking I must be getting old I don't know what MCM is or the game of thrones!!! eek lol.

I admire your talent. I have three small sewing machines collecting dust as I haven't a clue how to changing the thread, lol. I went as far as to buying a Sew Easy and I hate the wide holes it makes.

Look how late I am, but still in under the gun! lol Isn't it funny how our kids don't want our help or they don't *need* it until, oh wait, yes they do! And then we just drop everything and rescue them. ;) What a good mum you are! I like the looks of your conservatory...I don't know what the rules are over there, about conservatories, but I'm thinking I would be snagging that room for all my crafting! lol Thanks for hostessing our hop around the world. :)

Julia, you asked about the stamp thingy on my blog...it's Stamping Gear by Inkadinkadoo(you can google that term and see pictures). I didn't get the deluxe kit, just the small starter kit, which I think is going to do me just fine, although...I am wondering if I don't *need* at least the big circle gear, too! lol
