On the World Cup

I'm, ahem, *fat and in my forties*. I know, I can't believe it either...but age wise, it's a good place. Sport other than swimming has never been a feature in my life.
I walk. To the car.
However, Mr Dunnit is a keen sportsman. He has no particular 'team' in football, rather a keen and if I may say, insightful overview of the Premier and Champoins Leagues. Over the years then, football particularly has percolated into my brain and I find myself not disinterested by big tournaments. I can temper that by telling you that I can sit at my desk with my back to the TV and simply enjoy hearing the roaring and groaning of a man 'enjoying' the beautiful game...I just wanna know the score. What I really love about all international tournaments - Olympics, Eurovision, World Cup - is the opportunity you get to have a closer look at other cultures and foreign parts. Not especially the coverage itself, but some of the programmes we've watched that have been created around South Africa being the host country have been marvellous. The Wags who went out there and worked really hard, Neil Morrissey and his chum crossing the African continent with some of their own brew for the tournament, cookery and history aplenty. Love that. And of course, national pride. The Rainbow Nation really are showing that pride off, in every grin and every dance..how can you not enjoy their pleasure, and the views over their amazing country. And pride here too - I have my flag for the car (which Mr Dunnit hates - says it draws attention......hell yeah!); we have England paper napkins (I must admit that we don't 'dine with napkins' on a normal everyday basis!) and we have face paints. Of course. This country is incredibly good at national (well placed) pride, we just don't show it too often, so I enjoy it very much. The endless analysis of football matches, selection processes and true interview meanings - not so much. For the love of St George though? I can live with it!
With my back to the TV I've used Crafthouse Press 'Weenicons' die cut decoupage kit for these two cards....only addition is a teensy bit of sparkle to Beckham's bling. I love the England decades card - I'm delighted that you can recognise them even though at first glance they're really similar! Well I think I can: Moore, Keegan, Lineker,Gascoine, Beckham. Great scrapbook inserts for those of us with a tale to tell from this tournament, and fab cards for Fathers Day. Ohhh, two goals then!

  1. hehe brilliant card Julia!!!! I am not a footie fan, more into Wimbers & althletics, but I do love to see all the patriotism that sweeps the country when there is a tournament. It does sound as if we have the same physical trainer though hahaha XXX

  2. Like the card, patriotic I am, but football no.. however I do confess to semi watching the match on Saturday and it will probably be on when England play.. but bring on Wimbledon... just keeping my tennis whites clean so I can dress up and sit in front of the telly while it is on!

  3. absolutely brilliant! Wish we had that here, but then again we didn't even make it to the tournament this year so I'll just crawl away in shame now...

  7. Kevin Keegan was the reason I started following Liverpool back in the early 70's (I was a teenager) - some friends and I were in his fan club - probably still got somewhere, a bright orange poster of him by a sports car (signed, too) I watch all the footie I can, 3 matches yesterday AND the formula one! Not sure how I will fit in Wimbledon next week!! Where is work going to get a look in?! Oh, and great card!

  8. These are wonderful Julia, great fun :-) Though I did wonder why Gazza is wearing a beret? That's what it looks like to me!

  9. Fab cards, I don't really have much of a choice where the football is concerned at the moment, I can hear it being played in both the kitchen and the lounge at present(!). My husband usually puts a flag out but so far hasn't as yet, he refuses to have flag on the car no matter how much the kids nag, doesn't help that I showed him a joke I was sent that insinuated the reason for the flags was to confirm the size of a certain part of male anatomy!! 10. great cards...I say that through gritted teeth and clenched fists as I detest football with almost as much passion as OH loves it. Thankfully he hasnt inflicted too much on me yet, he keeps going round to his mates to watch it lol I honestly cannot stand the noise, the droning voices and inane commentary, I don't even want to know the scores, couldn't care less lol My one concession is to buy some Union Jacks which I am going to make into cushions and maybe a bag.

Thankyou so much for my package which came today, I love the you know what, how clever. Let me know when i can show it off. Can I mention the other bits? they are gorgeous, such a lovely pakage to open.xxx

  13. Hi Julia

I just love your blog post :O) lol lol I too have to hear and watch the big tournements,my hubby brought flags for our car, my son opened the window and it flew away lol. I find it sad most people on fly the flag for these tournements they should be up all the time lol, had to giggle at your napkins! your cards are gorgeous fabulous decoupage.

  14. That card is ACE!!!!! I love the world cup, although I stop short at the flag on the car. My classroom however is festooned with flags of all the nations, and we're having world cup themed lessons all week (we thought we'd better get it in quick before England go out!). I watched the WAGs programme too, and thought it was great.

Did I say that card was ACE? It is!

  15. Fab card...recognised Becks straight away and when I had another look could see Keegan & Lineker LOL

I have St George flags decorating the office and sunshades in the car (can't stand the noise the flags make but had to have something). Not a great footie fan but I will have it on and listen to it in the background when England are playing...after all, a bit of National pride doesn't go amiss - does it.

    Toni :o)

I even managed to watch a film yesterday and have a nap thanks to the free time :-) Thanks so much for my parcel which arrived today, it is perfect and I can't wait to show it off!

  23. I don't DO football, I'd even go so far as to say that I hate it. This appears to leave me out of sync with 3/4 of the planet, but I can't help it. But to everyone who does enjoy it good for you. Love the idea of crafting with your back to the TV though ....

  25. it is very clever how they are recognisable from just those little cariacatures (yeah more points for complex spellings...) do work... I am not at all a football follower and spent 20 blissful minutes in my car on open roads going from me best mates old home to my current home....just chilling (like christmas used to be) and waved to 15 other, happy relaxed SMILING WOMEN drivers: Honestly only 15 other road users spotted in 20 minutes......... lesson? its the football loving blokes we need to keep off our congested roads!!!!!

PS same time last weekend = 45 minutes for the same journey

  26. Those cards are so fun - Footie Fabuloso!

Having said that, we don't do the "F" word in our house, except for England matches, of course. Unfortunately, surrounded by various fanatics at work and my bestest crafting friend, I have osmosed stuff over the years. I learned 2 phrases very early on that I roll out every Monday - "The boys done good" and "where was the ref?" which serve me well, apparently.....

I do however have a claim to football fame - in 1 of the 3 live matches I have been to in my life, and very many years ago, I saw George Best play at one of them :-D

  27. Hear, hear Julia - well placed national pride is a good thing. I too am not usually a football fan but love the international flavours you get with the World Cup.

  33. Like Angie. I don't 'do' football but recognised most of the faces on that card, love the Beckham one *g* Like you I don't mind sitting here listening to Craig making noises at the telly when it's on, I kinda object when he insists we all have to watch it together (I'd rather go to Tescos when England is playing, it's empty, total joy to shop in there for once!)
