Well that was a week!
My Workdesk is unchanged in terms of any sort of action except the dumping kind...but silver lining - I've dumped actual Christmas presents on it! They aren't hand made or anything but of course they are a secret at least until they're wrapped. And that will happen soon because that's my one solid plan this year - I am not going to spend a whole day or however many evenings it takes to wrap all the presents. I'm wrapping as I go (excluding the fancy bows etc), and then they can be stored in a box in the room of shame, just as they would be normally only more ready than not. I'm determined!
So, for a photo...
This is what I'm calling the desk. It's just the kitchen worktop but shows the crochet off. Originally I had the idea to make some placemats with this gorgeous teal cotton. A rectangle of blue in moss stitch with a silvery subtle decorative edge. Sounds nice, but it's not going well. And this is about the fifth attempt. The cotton is so fine and satin smooth that the foundation chain looks horribly scrappy. If I can't get one to look right, a set of sixI have sad news to impart. We were joined at some point in the WOYWW story by Tertia. A South African mother, teacher and crafter. She didn't join in much after she retired but we stayed in touch by Facebook, as I'm sure a few of us have. I was really saddened to see that her family posted details of a commemorative service for her probably only a handful of days after I'd seen one of her regular posts. Hr posts were always loving, usually involving pride in her family or celebrating the success of a former pupil. Absolutely no doubt that the world is a poorer placed without Tertia and isn't it true that condolences just don't seem enough.

That's really sad news about Tertia...the world will miss her I'm sure. I love crochet but I doubt I would take on that job...my hands just wouldn't be up to it now sadly. I did once crochet for a shop and even made a huge circular baby blanket in a day once....Oh to have that time now eh?

Your crochet needle looks very small. A labour of love! Sorry to hear about your friend, Happy WOYWW. Angela #10
ReplyDeleteOh how sad about Tertia, I hadn’t seen the news on FB. A lovely lady, she was always a regular Desker and commenter, aren’t we lucky to meet these people? Without WOYWW our paths would never have crossed. What a shame re that yarn for the place mats, it sounded such a great idea but if the first one is causing you grief then it doesn’t bode well for six! I’m impressed with the wrapping of presents, we’ve hardly started shopping, no one seems to want anything this year.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, there is a folding tote in both lighter and darker chook fabrics, give a shout if you’d like one xx

Sorry to hear about Tertia ,though I hadn't kept in touch. Can't help with your crochet, its definitely not one of my skills . Well done on the gift buying and wrapping though . Helen #2
ReplyDeleteSad news about Tertia and thank you for letting us know. I can’t crochet so can’t help with yours problem-sorry. Catriona
ReplyDeleteSad news about Tertia, her poor family will miss her so much. Like many techniques I gave crochet a go and actually used crochet cotton to create a border for a very large tablecloth. I loved doing it but it was quite a job to say the least. I think if I was doing it again I would start at least a year before I expected to finish it Lol! However, I think the hook looks rather small, maybe try something slightly bigger. Happy woyww, Angela x9x
ReplyDeleteThe crochet looks lovely. If you intend to add a silvery decorative edge won't that go over the initial chain and neaten it up somewhat? It's poo being ill isn't it, thought I was getting over it last week then went to a wedding Saturday and have since had a relapse - oh well. Hugs BJ#1
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about Tertia. I don’t think the crochet is your fault, I suspect it’s the yarn. I hope you get used to it and succeed. Maybe try a few rows with a more open pattern, eg half triple crochets?
ReplyDeleteHappy WOYWW, hugs, Lynnecrafts 7 xx
I have a similar attempt at crochet! It is in the shape of a circle, about 2” in diameter! I have kept it, still attached to the ball of thread, just to prove that I tried it once! You already are further along!
ReplyDeleteI remember Tertia but did not keep in touch. She and her love and kindness will be missed.
Oh such sad news. I almost never use FB except for classes with private groups so never kept up. Sad, that, Wish I had. She will be missed. As to the crochet, you might try the foundation chain+1st row at the same time technique. https://youtu.be/IFC-as6XS6Q?si=GIgpVcxMeWQ1iQRI will do as a tutorial. Might help, because the rest of it is looking fine - a larger hook might give you a more lacy fabric, not great for a placemat. You couls make a swatch and check out how a round of single crochet might help to finish things off.
ReplyDeleteHTH Happy +1 day WOYWW

I was just saying to Helen who had mentioned the over abundance of emails from Temu. I unsubscribed as they were driving me up the wall! I just sent another order as I needed another two pairs of the gloves, of course I had to add a few things to get free postage 🤣
ReplyDeleteSorry I'm so late, I finally found a few minutes between carving the pumpkin and roasting the seeds! It's always sad losing a WOYWW member. I don;t remember her, but from what I hear she was a lovely woman and will be missed.😢 I know nothing about crochet, so I hope you find some answers! I tried wrapping presents as I got them one year, but didn't put the tags on...I ended up having to unwrap yo figure out what they were and who they were for! TIP: write on a post it note what the present is! Otherwise it will drive you crazy. 🎃Lindart#14
ReplyDeleteoh that is sad news about Tertia, thanks for sharing I remember her posts back in the earlier woyww days. As to the crotchet, not a clue as I really struggle with this, my granny squares always ended up as triangles-no idea why!! But, well done on getting some Christmas shopping done, especially with everything going on for you both at the moment. I havent even started making cards yet!

Sad news about Tertia Julia - thanks for letting us all know. Sorry but I can't be of any help relating to crochet. Well done on wrapping as you go. Sorry for the belated visit. Stay safe and Happy belated WOYWW. Sarah
ReplyDeleteHI Miss Julia.
ReplyDeleteHugs at the lost of one of our own. I don't remember her but sounds like a loving woman.
I'm a basic crocheter so not a lot of help on this one., but I can offer a couple of suggestions. may be that the thread is too fine for what you want the outcome to be. the lighter the thread, the more 'wonky' the pattern can become, especially if you crochet loose. Try checking your gauge to make sure your stitching per inch is correct.
Hugs & Creative Blessings!
