What's On Your Workdesk? Wednesday 324

Here is a brief explanation of WOYWW.
And here is how to do WOYWW.
Please join in. It makes me look good. And my desk doesn't.

What's happening here is the five or 'ten minute slot' job. You know the time when you're hanging between finishing something and going out, or have come back from being out and have to go somewhere else but it's too soon, so being at home for twenty minutes is preferable, but it's not long enough to do much? (I'll feel a lot better about all this if you say you know exactly what I mean.)
So I'm trying to be constructive. I have a lot of scrapbook appointments coming in the autumn (which starts next month, people of the northern hemisphere). So to maximise my output, I'm trying to match photos and papers and have them all together. It doesn't minimise the packing required, but it certainly helps if I don't have to take every sheet of paper I possess and spend quality time doing this very job. As you can see, it leads to a mess. Although some of the mess is inevitably stamps waiting to be put away and such. It's just in me, I can't help it. I'm on the rota to be an Apprentice today, so this will be stay as it is. Surprising that, huh!
Show and tell time for you now...put WOYWW on your post title and link it here will you -it makes the rest of my week more interesting. Thank you!

  2. I know where you're coming from, for sure! although mostly I fill my slots with doing not very much..your desk looks quite clear from that angle I think, really I do! Or maybe we are just used to your desk! Hope your Apprentice stint goes well!

  3. Agreed, Julia, if only we could add all those 10 minutes here and there together and get a good couple of hours, great things might be achieved.Or not, as the case may be. Happy wednesday Julia, love & hugs, Shaz #5 xxxx

  4. I know I accomplish the most when I'm on some kind of deadline. Not so when I'm just puttering in my craft room and wandering aimlessly deciding what comes next in whatever project I'm working on.

Have fun at your "day job" and we'll see you when you get home tonight! And I'm sure you'll know what photos you want to use with what papers by then, too (OR NOT).

  5. Ooh this smacks of being organised!! Well done :-)
I look forward to seeing your apprentice progress, its craft by another name.

  6. I am useless unless I have a good block of time. If I only have 10 or 20 minutes, I'm more inclined to read or check my mail or tidy up. If I'm trying to do something creative, I'll balls it up if I rush! Speaking of the fall, sept. Crop is. a go, right? Hoping nothing gets in the way of it.
Happy to be back. Happy WOYWW

  7. Sorry for making a mess of mr. linky. The second listing of my name is actually linked to peggy!!! My internet has not been working well. And of course I understand about all things "mess'. I'm the foremost expert on it, 5 minute, 10, 16, you name it! I can make a mess of anything, including mr. linky! Happy WOYWW! patsy

  8. It's a good plan! Hopefully it'll help reduce the crafting panic come the autumn :-). I don't know about you but I want time to slow down. Pretty please.......

  9. My life is filled with snatched minutes Julia so I know exactly what you mean :-) So much so that my new sewing room is being planned for exactly that life style.

  10. Hi Julia,
I've missed being around recently but a bad back, lack of creativity and my 60th birthday all got in the way of things.
Hope you are well and when I find myself having a sneaky gap between jobs it's usually kettle on and a nice cup of tea haha. Not that I'm lazy it's just I'm a born procrastinator.
Enjoy your week, I'm off for a look round some desks now before the day begins proper.

  12. I know exactly what you mean! Any spare minutes I get at the mo usually finds me in the garden, deadheading or watering plants in the greenhouse! I need at least a good half an hour to get anything serious done in my craft room. Have a good week

  13. Hi Julia, oh yes we all understand - do you know that I have burnt the broccoli in a pot this week AND the frying pan too got a bit overheated...just because I walked down to my room and 1 minute turned into 10....crafting can be dangerous!! Definitely agree that sorting before the event save one dragging half the room with you. Have a fab week Cheers RobynO#18

  14. Ten minute slots don't seem to apply to me these days but I know where you are coming from. I can equate with you and your sorting through your papers to get matching ones, something I try but am not good at achieving. Usually end up in a mess and then they all get put back - I a not good at using papers up.
Well, enjoy your apprentice day and have a good week.

  16. I know that feeling well, but as my craft room is upstairs and behind locked doors (regulations not from me) I rarely pop into my room for a quick 5 minutes, more likely I end up emptying the dishwasher or something like that!!

  17. I am at the best possible place today. Stuck at home with my car in the shop. Nowhere to go, nothing to do but visit deskers and play in my happy place, I would be happy to share 10 minutes of all that time with you. Just fly on over and we can play together.
Happy WOYWW (even though its not the same without Janet)

  19. Ah! slots! you would laugh if you could see me now. I am doing this while getting changed to go to my mothers. We have been assigned a job of clearing the wardrobe ready for new carpet to be fitted. So I have second slots in between putting on various clothing. As you may guess I am doing this on my laptop which is resting on the dressing table (or temporary desk for this slot). Better go as can hear him indoors coming. Have a great woyww. Angela x 24

  20. I love the look of your desk, it's so much more interesting to see stuff out .
I'm looking at your desk thinking those lovely stamps and texture plates would work great with my clay. I love looking at paper craft desks for that very reason.

  21. Hi Julia your desks absolutely organised in comparison with the room I craft in ! Life at the moment has meant me crafting a bit here and there and dumping stuff in there:-) Hope Apprentice Day goes well! :-) x

  22. I know exactly what you mean - I tend to get much more done when I'm trying to whizz through a ten minute time slot than if I have several hours free to so whatever I want in the studio! You're looking very organised, and I can't believe Autumn is almost here, what happened to the summer?! Hope you have a great week,

  23. I guess we all have minutes to cram in some little odd job that helps us have more time later for the fun things. As I age, I have given up being so very tidy. I like to be organized and work ahead, but keep everything in it's place doesn't happen here on a daily basis. Storms are headed this way for another day so hoping we don't lose electricity. Seems almost as fall is coming too soon. And with the change of seasons I'll have another mess of changing decor. Have a fun week, I'm off to visit.

  25. Know 'zactly what you mean Julia, that's what I love about a craft room having card on the go can leave or hours and come back and add 15 mins to it .. a treat it is!!

Am impressed basically at the neatness of your desk .. mine is fairly neat today, but hide the pile to the left :D I do put stamps away though, one of my idiosyncrasies... paper snippets now that is another story or deluge to be more precise!

Thanks so much for sharing, so faithfully for hundreds of weeks now.

  27. Yes, I know exactly what you mean. When I was still working, and was more (had to be) more organised, I had a little tray with 10 minute jobs. A topper to be coloured in or something that needed fussy cutting that could be done in 10 minutes. A nearly finished LO that only needed the photos sticking in etc. It gave me satisfaction that I had done a few things even though I didn't have time that day.
I should be doing that again.... I'd get much more done!
    Have a great week,

  28. I know exactly what you mean with 'ten minute slot job'... I don't know what to do with such a time either and usually scribble a bit on a piece of paper (which I can turn into a tiny art journal later.) Hope your week brings sunshine and blue skies and a bit (a lot) of creativity! Happy woyww and a big hug from Holland, Marit #36

  29. I don't do slots very well. I come in here and either am here for hours or I don't stay at all. Wish I could actually do the slots...I might actually get more done! Your desk looks sort of clear this morning...maybe it is just the angle!

  31. Working on an art project in such short installments is not fun. I had to do it for the last two days as I worked on a bulletin board for my classroom in between workshops. Blessings!

  32. Oh I know exactly what you mean. I'm having a slot job right now! Inbetween treadmill, getting ready and leaving the house, I'm trying to sketch out an embroidery! It's so nice to have the scrapbooking to look forward to, isn't it? Have a good week. Hugs. Sandy Leigh

  34. last night I left comments this morning they are no-where. I just knew our provider messed with the internet service again. happy to say we have a new one coming today between 8am and 11 pm. Not posted much recently due to sad state of my body and the frenzy the medication left me in. Now OK, well for me. Followed the posts from sea to shining mountain top. keep it up Ms julie

  35. I do a similar thing with housework, slotting chores in between work and the fun stuff - well you have to get your priorities right don't you? Sounds like a good plan to do all the paper choosing and matching ahead of time, I spend longer choosing paper than making a page usually! Have fun :o) Annie C #48

  36. I know exactly what you mean, Julia. I'm often found trying to fit something into the odd half minute here and there - for example, right now I'm waiting to get into the lounge, presently occupied by himself and the hoover, to finish off the dusting! How exciting is my life :) Been sorting paper out for scrapping too ... all in an effort to save time :) Hope your apprentice day has gone well and that you have a great week ahead. 38. I like your "never waste a minute" mentality. I like to do the same but once I get in my little room time flies by and minutes soon turn into hours - still, if no-one misses me then there isn't a problem is there! lol x Jo

  39. I am the Queen of "10 minutes here-10 minutes there"! I usually have something unfinished on my desk! Coming back to things in the middle of a project gives me a new look at what I'm doing! And you are smart to spend your time now packing what you need than doing it in a hurry at the last minute and forgetting the most important things! Thanks for sharing, Lindart #50

  40. Ah... yes! I do know exactly what you mean. I find when I get frustrated that I have had no time to play it is often because I quite stealing those 10 minutes and 10 minutes there slots. They are very important!

  41. I'm joining in the nose around this week, although forgive me it will take me a day or so as like everyone else, time is in short supply.

  44. Seems to me you've been doing inbetween-crafting for the past month! Hope you'vefound times for longer sessions too. And yes, most of us know what you mean, besides if you only have a few minutes at a time, why waste it on putting stuff away? Happy woyww! Kristiina #12

  46. Hello, Julia, happiest of WOYWWs to you. Making up scrapbooking "kits" of photos + papers is a good idea. I sometimes write a few lines of a story on a 3 x 5 card and paperclip it with the photos, which seems to help me get started. Hope you have a chance to play again soon. :-)

  47. Hello Julia!

Reporting back to mother ship after being lost in space for 2 months. Time is a funny thing...sometimes it flies sometimes it stands still and you can't wait for that 1 minute to go...I guess using every spare minute you have is a good thing!
    Lots of hugs,

It doesn't take much to throw everything out of kilter (especially when t'internet decides it doesn't want to play nice for a couple of days grrrrrrrrrr.
    Desk looks very organised Julia.

  51. I'd say it's a very efficient use of time : D. I've become a huge huge fan of making up "kits" before I start scrapping, even though I'm always scrapping at home. Extra joy when I remember to pull some stamps : D. #59

  52. Julia, I need a block of time because it seems it takes 20 minutes simply to get focused! And I lose track of time while I'm creating and I fear I would get going then look up only to discover an hour went by and I missed my appointment. BTY, try not to be a slob anymore but once school starts all bets are off!

  53. I just realized I haven't dropped you a message! I was saddened by the news in your previous post - another loss for the WOYWW family :-(
I've been using those 5 to 10 minute time slots to add some finishing touches to my painting. It's taking too much of my desk space!
    Happy WOYWW!
