Walk with me awhile....

The amateur photographer in me was awoken by this sight as I drove past at the weekend.  Yesterday I took my camera to it and spent a lovely few minutes snapping away pretending I knew what I was doing. Isn't it a lovely sight?  I can't remember this particular field ever being poppy strewn, but I'm told that the seeds lie dormant for up to twenty years, so as soon as the farmer decided against using this field for a crop, bam!, here are the poppies.  So I invite you to walk with me, ponder, enjoy the wonderful sunshine and revel in the extraordinary colours of land and sky.  I don't walk for pleasure.  I need a reason.  Like a shop with a Mars bar or a pub with a G&T at the end of the walk.  Having said that, golf is too much of a reason.  Oh I'm so contrary! But the ten minutes or so it took me to get to this field and the few minutes I spent revelling in being a photographer were lovely, and I'm very pleased with my result.  And on the way home, I managed to think about some bits and pieces that remain to be caught up with, so it was a good outing.  Maybe this is why people do it.  Fresh air therapy, I get it.  Although, to be completely honest, I didn't do a lot of walking.
But I did enjoy the fresh air.  And the freewheel from here to where I have to cross the road to get home was a blast!

  4. Oh my! How beautiful? I can't believe that I missed the rape seeds this year as every time I passed a fabulous yellow field it was raining!

I love taking photos and hopefully I'll find a poppy field soon.

  6. Oh thank you thank you, Julia, so much for sharing those stunning poppies I cannot imagine what it would have been like to have seen them in the flesh but is simply lovely to see them this way..
I like walking for the fresh air and thinking as you said makes it worth while and of course my beach takes some beating; there was a six foot surf yesterday and there were some youngsters with surf comp on they were amazing to watch too! hi from Shaz in oz.x

  8. Hi Julia, it is a stunning photograph, nothing nicer than a field of poppies or oil seed rape in my opinion. What a pity that the Countryfile photo comp is now closed - this would have been an ideal candidate - it really is gorgeous! A xx

I'm enjoying walking the dog these days, now that I am not so pressed for time but I just wish I had places like this to see on my walks!

  15. Well that pic took me back a year or two. I remember stopping by a poppy field to take a picture of Maxine in the poppies in her little red and white frock - 1984 I think!! Yours is a stunning pic Julia. x Jo

  18. I've never seen a poppy field, but I really enjoyed this one. I don't think they grow in my area. Too hot and dry in summer and too cold in winter. Your photo of that field is truly super. I think you have super photography skills. And I love seeing photos of places I may never have a chance to visit.

I must miss WOYWW this and next week because I'm working on a major project with a non-negotiable deadline. I simply don't have the time to devote. But I'll be dropping in whenever I can.

  21. ooh that poppy field is so gorgeous - thank you so much for sharing it with us. I used to love walking, I could walk miles and miles. I did prefer to have somewhere to go though. I don't drive and it was my chosen mode of transport. When I ended up with M.E. it put paid to my walking and I miss it loads! When I recover I hope to get back to it, to some degree at least xx

  24. wow, that had to be an amazing feeling, walking out there into that field of poppies! beautiful shot! Love your bicycle, it's too hilly to ride one here, I'd end up pushing it around I'm afraid! lol waving hi from the hills of North Carolina :)

  25. Gorgeous Julia Makes you want a Cadburys flake & go sit in the field .

  26. That field is just beautiful. And you are right about the dormant poppy seeds. That's why a new bye-pass etc often has it's banks lined with poppies for the first year and then they mostly disappear. Nature is strange isn't it? Kate x

  27. I have never seen anything like that poppy field, how wonderful, I wonder how much opium could be harvested from it. LOL Sorry I couldn't help myself. Just randomly crossed my mind.

    Thanks for sharing

  28. How lovely - last week I painted a homage to Monet with his poppy field (needs some tweeking before I show it though) so how lovely to get to wander through a field like that! Like your bike too - I too have a basket on mine (everyone laughs at it until they suddenly realise they want to use it!).

  29. I love poppies so much! And now even more, that I know about their secret dormant capabilities...sneaky little things. I hope you get another inspiring walk in soon, I can't do without a good walk almost daily. :)

  35. Hi Julia this is a stunning shot. I love poppies. I think I would have been tempted to go and sit in the middle with a picnic and a glass of wine! Might have played havoc with the freewheel home though!

  36. Oh Julia, this is so beautiful. I adore poppies. I have tried for years to get some of these red ones but only have the yellow and orange. I do have a clump of the big Papavars but this field is wonderful.
    Thanks for sharing.

  37. Absolutely beautiful, Julia. This has to be one of my favourite sights on earth. When we went to Norfolk on holiday a few years ago I took so many photos of poppy fields! My poor hubby found them very disappointing as he's colour blind and they didn't show up at all for him!! How sad is that?

  39. Lovely photography. For all of me, I would think yo a professional. This takes me back to my childhood in Spain. We lived at the edge of a town and the fields were full of poppies.

  40. Poppies are one of my most favourite things to see, especially in a field like this, just stunning, I would love to walk with you here :)

  41. Yep. you need a reason. To get me to move again after an op that went wrong a few years back hubby would take me to towns with crafty shops...which I had to walk to! It worked! Lovely pictures!....hubby has been forgiven for ripping up my orange and yellow poppies, which he thought were weeds...

  45. This sight is stunning. No wonder you wanted to capture it in a photo. I have an odd wee group of poppies here and there along the side of the road on the way to my work and the sight of them nodding in the breeze cheers me up, so I arrive at work smiling. Thanks for sharing this, love it!

  46. Before I start on my WOYWW snoop, I just had to feast my eyes on these - absolutely blooming marvelous :) I adore poppies, especially great swathes of them like this, and we don't see enough of them these days. Poppies grow best on poor soil, with no added chemicals, fertiliser, etc., and I'd say there isn't much chemical free land in the UK today. That the farmer has decided not to grow a crop there this year might be a reason for this glorious sight, but there again, it could be that the he has joined in this scheme that is promoting meadows - whichever reason, good decision :)) Thanks for sharing, Elizabeth xx

  49. I love poppies - there is one hillside by our house that gets covered with California poppies each year. I've always wanted to stop and take a photo, but it's on the side of the freeway. This is gorgeous!

  50. Oh Julia

I'm so glad I caught this post while still going through my emails... I think you know I have a love of poppies and have been trying to paint them of late - i'll show on my blog, but oh, the sight is to be beholden. It doesn't get much better in my book.

You really are better at photography than you give yourself credit for.
