The amateur photographer in me was awoken by this sight as I drove past at the weekend. Yesterday I took my camera to it and spent a lovely few minutes snapping away pretending I knew what I was doing. Isn't it a lovely sight? I can't remember this particular field ever being poppy strewn, but I'm told that the seeds lie dormant for up to twenty years, so as soon as the farmer decided against using this field for a crop, bam!, here are the poppies. So I invite you to walk with me, ponder, enjoy the wonderful sunshine and revel in the extraordinary colours of land and sky. I don't walk for pleasure. I need a reason. Like a shop with a Mars bar or a pub with a G&T at the end of the walk. Having said that, golf is too much of a reason. Oh I'm so contrary! But the ten minutes or so it took me to get to this field and the few minutes I spent revelling in being a photographer were lovely, and I'm very pleased with my result. And on the way home, I managed to think about some bits and pieces that remain to be caught up with, so it was a good outing. Maybe this is why people do it. Fresh air therapy, I get it. Although, to be completely honest, I didn't do a lot of walking.

Oh my! How beautiful? I can't believe that I missed the rape seeds this year as every time I passed a fabulous yellow field it was raining!

ReplyDeleteI like walking for the fresh air and thinking as you said makes it worth while and of course my beach takes some beating; there was a six foot surf yesterday and there were some youngsters with surf comp on they were amazing to watch too! hi from Shaz in oz.x

ReplyDeleteI've never seen a poppy field, but I really enjoyed this one. I don't think they grow in my area. Too hot and dry in summer and too cold in winter. Your photo of that field is truly super. I think you have super photography skills. And I love seeing photos of places I may never have a chance to visit.

I don't drive and it was my chosen mode of transport. When I ended up with M.E. it put paid to my walking and I miss it loads! When I recover I hope to get back to it, to some degree at least xx

ReplyDeleteThat field is just beautiful. And you are right about the dormant poppy seeds. That's why a new bye-pass etc often has it's banks lined with poppies for the first year and then they mostly disappear. Nature is strange isn't it? Kate x

How lovely - last week I painted a homage to Monet with his poppy field (needs some tweeking before I show it though) so how lovely to get to wander through a field like that! Like your bike too - I too have a basket on mine (everyone laughs at it until they suddenly realise they want to use it!).

Absolutely beautiful, Julia. This has to be one of my favourite sights on earth. When we went to Norfolk on holiday a few years ago I took so many photos of poppy fields! My poor hubby found them very disappointing as he's colour blind and they didn't show up at all for him!! How sad is that?

Lovely photography. For all of me, I would think yo a professional. This takes me back to my childhood in Spain. We lived at the edge of a town and the fields were full of poppies.

Lovely pictures!....hubby has been forgiven for ripping up my orange and yellow poppies, which he thought were weeds...

ReplyDeleteBefore I start on my WOYWW snoop, I just had to feast my eyes on these - absolutely blooming marvelous :) I adore poppies, especially great swathes of them like this, and we don't see enough of them these days. Poppies grow best on poor soil, with no added chemicals, fertiliser, etc., and I'd say there isn't much chemical free land in the UK today. That the farmer has decided not to grow a crop there this year might be a reason for this glorious sight, but there again, it could be that the he has joined in this scheme that is promoting meadows - whichever reason, good decision :)) Thanks for sharing, Elizabeth xx

I love poppies - there is one hillside by our house that gets covered with California poppies each year. I've always wanted to stop and take a photo, but it's on the side of the freeway. This is gorgeous!
