So you like chocolate?

I'm quite well known for using childish phrases that adequately describe certain things.  You may not want to read this over your favourite snack or at lunch time.  You know those lovely thick, dimensional glue dots.  Yeah, Great aren't they.  I call 'em Snots.  'Coz they're so thick and gluey, that if you need to, the only way to get rid of them is to treat them like snot...get it on your finger and roll it around until it's not sticky and then flick it...somewhere.  So what's this to do with chocolate?  Well, Mrs Precision and Shopkeeper Gal were overcome by their curiosity and while I was there last Thursday, they tried the new chocolate flavoured Philadelphia.  Yep.  The famous Philly cream cheese is available in chocolate flavour.  It sparked some discussion, of course.  I think it's going to be another Marmite.  And whilst I love Marmite, I don't like chocolate Philadelphia.  I don't like chocolate cheesecake which is the nearest taste I can attribute to it.  It smells very rich.  It's texture is wonderfully thick..it really is dream-like molten chocolate. And the taste is of erm, chocolate. For a minute.  Then you experience that 'thing' that all the wine connoisseurs talk about. The 'hint of' - the 'after note', a 'top note'.  Of cheese.  It's not right for me.  Puts me very much in mind of another brand of chocolate that's famous in the USA - Hershey. You know that teeny moment when you burp silently in your mouth and you get a taste of well, sick?  That's what it was for me.  Sweet and cheese.  Not for me apparently.  Or Hershey...it reminds me of unsweetened chocolate sprinkled with dried Parmesan cheese.
Why on earth have I written this post? Because if we ever meet, I'll need you to know what I do and don't eat.  Seems entirely reasonable to me.  And I promise not to be too childish about chocolate, cheese or cake.  No guarantees about snot though.

  3. Julia, I have to give you Brownie points for trying it!! I'm afraid spreading chocolate flavoured Philadephia onto a cracker would be pushing the boundaries a bit... I was sort of under the impression that they had brought it out so people could make cheesecake with it... now I might try in the cheesecake format!! You don't like Marmite?? Oh dear... a life without Twiglets... its unthinkable!!
Glue dots... I call them boogers... for very much the same reason you call them snot!! ;)

  5. I don't think I'll try it. I like to make Buffalo Chicken Dip with my cream cheese :D.

Hershey is something you have to be raised with to like I think. They are the best for S'mores IMO. I had a friend in Scotland who was intrigued with WW2, but had never tried a Hershey bar. So I sent him some. Let's just say he didn't care for it lol.

  7. We have all been wondering what it is like and whether to try it...I was the only one who HAD decided to try it ..after your description ...maybe not...the last bit put me right off ...although I sort of like choc cheese cake ...not my fav by any means.
Have you tried the new Boursin with dried tomatoes ...yummy ...and works adding flavour to a cream sauce on pasta too. You may have worked out that I haven't started my diet yet..lol.

  8. That does sound entirely yucky!! I do have to say though, that I am quite fond of Hershey's chocolate! Could be because it's readily available, considering i live about an hour and a half from the factory heh heh. Maybe I should just splurge on some choc covered coffee beans...yummm, now that's some good stuff!

  9. Oh I do love Hershey chocolate but then again we were poor when I was a child and that was all my grandmother could afford, so it was a grand treat. My father asked one day why I would not eat three foods (I will eat almost anything) but okra, oysters and milk. Yuk!!!! I told him okra and oysters taste like snot and milk leaves a dry taste in my mouth. I never eaten any of these since the day I tasted them over 60 years ago. I'd rather eat liver.

I think Chocolate should be enjoyed as is ;)

  11. It kind of tastes like rich chocolate pudding (the cooked kind not yucky instant) but with a cheesecake aftertaste. I think one trick is that you can't put too much on... it's not a slather it to death kind of thing. But a nice thin spread on a bagel was pretty good. Of course, I'm a believer that there IS such a thing as too much chocolate. Personally though, I still prefer strawberry Philly. If I want chocolate, I'll stick to Nutella, which I've been eating for more than a decade but has only recently become more available in rural areas like where I live.

  12. Why try and change something that's perfect...a chunk of chocolate from the fridge...Mmmm....nothing better.

Oops I've probably started a whole new argument now ~ chocolate in or out of the fridge?

Me...I'm for in the fridge...what do you say? ;D

  14. I definitely live in the wrong country because chocolate to me IS Hershey. I've been told there is REAL chocolate in the world, but I have apparently never tasted it. So, burp away and I'll keep my Hershey's to myself (grin).

  24. we don't have chocolate philly here yet...might be good lightly spread on a tortilla and filled up with strawberries then rolled? I was sure that where your story was going the glue dot snot ball was going to end up in your philly making it taste...well you get my drift....we don't get lots of those products here in canada...it's like we wait it out to see what the rest of the world has to say about it first...and then it makes it's way here...much like scrapbooking supplies...thank goodness for the internet!

  27. Ew! Triple ew! (skipping the double ew and rushing right into the triple ew-a breach of protocol in some places). I'm not a fan of flavored things to start with and definitely not a fan of chocolate but CHOCOLATE CHEESE?!?!?!!!! What on God's green earth were they thinking?!!!!!

What's your take on peanut butter and jelly IN THE SAME JAR???

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thatnks for the warning - I'm a self confessed chocoholics, but I'm not a Philly fan. I'll give a miss

  34. I love the chocolate Philly, it is great on Jacobs crackers. My husband bought THREE tubs after a guy at work gave him a taste.

    As for Hershey chocolate...YUCK!

Cadbury's is the best and if Kraft mess about with the chocolate, there will be an uprising!!

    Thanks for the giggles.

    Sheilagh.

    PS I hate Marmite:)

  41. I am a hater of marmite and Hersheys chocolate so I will probably not like chocolate Philidelphia. That said, I have a fantastic double chocolate cheesecake recipe which is yummy, so I may like it! You have aroused my curiosity...I will have to try some next time I go shopping!

  42. Chocolate and Cheese? No thanks fro me but thanks for the info Julia and brave you testing it for us. Never been that keen on cheesecake either (but I love Marmite), can remember the first time I tasted cheesecake - it made that much of an impact on me. Just like Peter Kay said about 'Garlic? Bread?

  44. oh gawd I picked the wrong time to read this post, even with the prewarning I continued on after I had just put my breakfast in my mouth to chew, I will never look at my peanut butter with berlina on toast ever the same again, it will always taste like snot to me hahahaha or the image of what snot tastes like mixed in with chocolate and cheesecake. I am game to try anything

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love Cadburys and I love Philly but together? No, it just doesn't work. I expected it to taste like chocolate spread but it doesn't. Its vile. Its the work of the devil I tell you.

    ReplyDelete
  46. try chilli chocolate ( mexican dishes)

also salted chocolate ( heart attack city but, Oh my!, salt and chocolate works, it really does)

so do you eat your snot? do you munch on your scabs?

i feel this is much more sociable way to dispose of ones personal bodily detritus than flicking it upon some poor unsuspecting partner who happens to be sitting close by...

I can't abide the toe nail clippings though - you know the ones that get parachuted to my side of the bed?... Why can't he do it in the bathroom? If I can eat my snot for him can't he keep his unwanted toe nail parts away from me?

why am I telling you this?

  51. Chocolate Philly does not appeal to me either so no danger of me serving it up to you should you ever come to tea :) But I do love Hershey's Kisses, just because they do taste like the cocoa, our suppertime drink when we were little. Elizabeth x

  52. That was a knee-slapping funny post! I didn't know there was such a thing as chocolate cream cheese, but I have tried chocolate cheesecake. Maybe it's only supposed to be eaten on graham crackers, like a cheesecake crust, without the fuss of baking a cheesecake? Anyway, you cracked me up, so thanks for the laugh! I'll be putting my 7-year-old grandsons to work making homemade glue dots for me!
