What's On Your Workdesk? Wednesday 141

WOYWW Housekeeping: If you read nothing else, please read the first paragraph!
Really, now the numbers are as fabulously high as they are, I have to insist that your blog post includes WOYWW in the title and is in some way relevant to your working area; this is particularly important if you link late...paging through loads of posts without knowing where to stop is enough to cause the reader to click away.
Likewise, when I get to links that are totally irrelevant (such as another Wednesday Meme courting for exposure), I'll remove it.  I don't want to do too much policing and have stacks of rules, but its not unfair to expect a workdesk related post if it's linked here is it!

Mary Anne has found this:
This will take you to a blog called The Great Leveller and talks about how to make a fix that allows people that currently can't, to comment on your blog.  A lot of us find if the comment box is at the foot of your post, that 'embed' prevents commenting...but where the blog provides a new page with comments and comment box, all is possible!  So if you wanna get a few more comments, this may well be worth the two minutes and two tabs it takes.  It is a temporary fix....Blogger itself has to come up with a permanent one...so no growling at The Great Leveller, huh!!

And here's one I've resisted, because I don't think it's actually any of my business:
I've had several requests to ask for word verification to be turned off.  Its a personal thing; in 4 years I think I've had two spam comments and never an 'attack', but you must be the judge. It's not difficult to turn off...if you want to do it but need help, please ask..there are a lot of closet geeks on WOYWW!
Oh my desk is a mess. In fact from this, it doesn't look too bad, but the left side is piled and 'push back' is in serious overtime.  But it has to be, I'm working on something that I'm finding a bit taxing.  See the old Pearl-Ex palette?  Had it about 8 years...still love it.  See the rainbow of a mug? Of course, a present from LLJ who knew I can't be uncheered in the presence of such things.  See the master board I made that's in the process of being cut up and turned into cards? Sheez...anyone would think I was busy!
Show us yours then, we wanna see what you're making this week.  And we're not scared by mess.  OK, I'M NOT.  Read the 'rules', abide by 'em, and we'll see you at your place for a jolly good look around.  Abyssinia, as my dear Papa shouted at me as I left his house this morning! Oh and PS..I've scheduled this...had a long day and can't stay up till the small hours....no really.  I have.  It may have involved that white van again!

  3. I don't know Julia, it looks pretty tidy at this angle, didn't recognize it for a moment! I am good at leaving out the right and left side of my desk, it seems appropriate not to inflict too much on unsuspecting WOYWWers! Dont know what a master board is but I gather it is the paper with the birds on, so pretty!
Happy WOYWW! Debxx # 4 (so excited to be number 4, my earliest yet!)

  4. busy desk as ever Julia, especially loving the birdy cardy things... it is official, I have MUG envy... love that... but most interesting to me... tell me do... what is the fork for? Gardening? In February? As for the van, you are a braver woman than me hun, I would have crashed it by now... am not good with big vehicles... well, apart from trains lol Enjoy your white-vanning today... see, you have made it a verb already! x

  7. I'm with Hels. The first thing I saw (even before the desk), was that garden rake. You have the greenest grass for February. Maybe you could write a post on how you keep it so green (glimmer mist, perhaps?).

I'm all for getting rid of word verification, but I understand some are reluctant to do so. If bloggers feel they need protection, then moderate the posts. After all, if the post is moderated, it can't get on the blog without approval. For the life of me, I've never understood word verification AND moderated approval. Guess we both climbed on a soapbox tonight. Mine might be taller, since I'm so short, anyway.

  8. Grrrr. Long comment lst. Poo.

I thought I was the only one who used Pearl Ex rather than Perfect Pearls. :)

WV used to make me crazy. Now I know I can't comment so I look and move on. Love Wordpress spam catcher. It's caught over 7000 spams, with only 5 missed and 16 false positives, and no WV

    Tootle pip missy!

  9. Oh Julia!! Fab desk this week, I haven't painted for ages... I wonder if that 'comment link' will help with some of the blogs I visit? I'll give it a go! I've just nipped in to get links from here and here you are already! Honestly, some might say that's cheating...so I'd better stop rabbiting and go finish my post...ohoo, bed before two this week!! ((Lyn))

  10. Ok Julia, where's the ladders, I can only see a fork standing on it's own in the garden, I bet they are in the back of that van!!!! your desk is pretty tidy this week but busy! What is a master board? Love your mug, Have a great wednesday Hugs May x x x x x

  11. I try to abide by the rules ...my posts just tend to be long and chatty ...and there isn't always a desk ...and I do try to remember to put woyww in the title ...but I always forget to put the number of my link on the end of my post ...will try harder lol.
I just find your desk fun to nose around ...its always busy ...had to smile looking out into your garden ...should there not be a bird sitting on the fork handle? lol xx

  12. Good to read an update and reminder on the rules and hope that I am at least some way there to abiding by them... this is such a fun round up and I have missed it terribly in the last few weeks... as to your desk... looks pretty productive and I really really want to steal your mug.... and that palette of shiny paint... and that big stamp... some serious supply envy happening here...xx

  13. Lol to Debs, you're creating a stampede on this side of the pond! My Valentines dinner had to go back in the oven as you posted at dishing out time and I wouldn't leave the laptop!! I actually think I was so excited to be in the top 20 last week that I completely forgot to leave you a comment! never heard of a pear-ex palette before but it looks very useful. Beautiful card on show and I'm so much looking forward to the tales of the woman and her van!

  14. Hi Julia making a brief appearance this week - and yes so agree with the housekeeping rules - not sure why i get a lot of spam - about two week at present - never used to but now do - anyway have not ever had word verification on hate it like crazy. I just authorize all comments that may be deflating for moments but not as bad as the word verification.. now like your desk and would long to have a play but must get back to mine and not much blogging at all allowed at present or card making sigh - one day soon I hope,

  17. I'll join in the debate... I hate word verification... it's a pain in the butt and if you are scared of spam moderate your comments. It could be because I hardly ever manage to prove I am not a robot the first time... its an age thing... the eye sight is going and my typing isn't what it used to be. There...now I feel better and am calm and collected again.. LOL

  18. Loving the bird stamped page .... I have never heard of Pearl-ex palette so you are a good 8 years ahead of me. The fork is a nice touch .....remind anyone of what is going to happen if you break the rules.

  19. Fab desk space :D
I hate word V also, I do get spam but not much but all my comments are moderated and so far nothing abusive has ever came through :D

  24. I spy a fork in the garden. What you digging? Being plaqued by some nerd at the moment leaves me an anonymous comment on each post but blogger sticks it into spam for me to delete off. Never had it happen before. Perhaps they will get bored. Right off to bed cos its 3.32am Hugs Mrs A.

  25. Your desk is not that bad, of course I was distracted by the birds on those cards. That's been happening a lot lately. You see, hubby made me watch this ridiculous show called "Portlandia" and they had this big long thing about how if you put a bird on anything you can call it art. Now I can't look at anything with a bird on it without thinking "Wow! That's art!" I never even noticed the lonesome rake until I read the others' comments! Have a good one!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Your desk is looking suitably busy and creative. If I use the 'push back' technique things will (and do) fly off the back (on account of it is not really a 'desk' (hehe)! Question: can you please tell us the name of the big, florally stamp right behind the palette. My Pearl-Ex is all powdered. I've not seen a palette version. Happy WOYWW.

    ReplyDelete
  27. A scheduled post indeed. I just scheduled mine and would love to link up in the double digits for a change but it ain't Wednesday in my neck of the desert yet. I put WOYWW in the title, already had word verification turned off, and I'll muddle with the comment posty thing later. Whew! Thanks for sharing your mess. You showed me yours and soon you'll see mine. I used to have one of those Pearl Ex palette. I never really did much with it. Happy tomorrow to you!

  35. I officially have jet lag but was asleep when you posted (scheduled). Good job I wake in the night for a prowl now that I am an old old lady. At least this week I beat my last week entry.
Thanks for showing us your desk, especially the birdie card on the right and the interesting card beneath your glasses (yes, they feature again).
Have you come to terms with your ATG gun yet, mine is behaving badly at the moment - perhaps sulking that I have been away!

  40. It's harsh isn't it, when you have to lay down guidelines first, eh?

Very inspiring desk this week! Love the birdy card in the background, and the rainbow mug is sweet, v cheery indeed!

I've given up on scheduling my posts, especially since I discovered I can change the date and time to whatever I like after publishing! Shame we can't schedule a link up though - 50 of us and it's only 6.15am! Crazy.... Who'd have thought you'd end up going "viral"?

See you back at mine some time this week!!!!

  41. Thank you for posting the housekeeping, that should be the top of your WOYWW posts every week now that we are getting new players. That ladder turned into a rake hee heee.

I did put WOYWW in my title this week but sort of boring with a clean slate, should you not play if you have a clean desk?? Thanks Julia for adding one more thing to my to do list I never finish lol

  45. Thate pearl-ex pallette looks like fun! I have never used it but have read about it. I think I have read that you can make misters by blending this as well.
Can't wait to see just what the project is...hope you post it.

Read the rules...it is a shame that you actually have to post them...this is a place for our desks and what we do on our desks...right!
Mine has some fun and some boring bits this week. Oh well, such is life!
Thanks for doing this ...I really enjoy it and am now addicted!

  46. really don't think your desk is nearly as messy as you think it is. I show my desk each week and if I showed the floor around it everyone would be running in fear of their lives...I sometimes worry my cat will get in there and get lost or toppled over on! Sorry you have to keep repeating the desk business...Vickie #64

  47. I love that paper with the shiny bits on it. Looks so luxurious. And that stamp right next to the palette? I want that stamp!

As for word verification. I do have it on because of the spammers. I'm thinking of turning it off again, but then I would also have to turn off the option to receive mailmessages I get whenever anyone comments. The problem is that blogger is pretty good in keeping the spam of my blog, but doesn't keep it out of my mailbox and that's very annyoing when the amount of spam is equal to the amount of real comments. It's a question of whether I can live with not getting the mailmessages because then I would always have to log on to blogger to see if I have any comments. Now they just come to me through the mail, which is a wonderful way to keep up with them.

    ReplyDelete
  48. That looks a really creative desk today.....a real artists desk :-)....oh no it's not a painting palette [it just looks like one to someone who doesn't know what you do with it :-) ].

  58. Great masterboard Julia and your desk always looks so busy. My desk had a new mug on it as well, only it got missed of the photo so it got one all to itself.
Can't believe that I posted the link at 6:45 this morning and I'm still 57th. Did wake up at 2:30 this morning and 'thought' about revving up the computer but then thought again and went back to sleep.
Don't mind word verification if it comes up in the comments box but hate it when you leave a comment, screen goes back to blog and then you are asked to verify, very frustrating. People may not know they have verification on, I didn't until it was pointed out to me.
Happy WOYWW and have a great day.

  61. I'm up for a spot of white van graffitti if you are...

how about the new woywwer logo?

Rules wise - it comes with the fame me dear....you're still in character worry not....

desk wise - love the pitch fork - very nicely framed and dominating the whole sheebang...

regards comments - I am not on blogger, but I know certain people use browsers that will cause them to be unable to comment on my website, and sadly I'm more interested in leaving comments than getting them - quite like being an incommunicado hermit....so have not posted 'cures' no one likes a smart arsed geek, and I have a contact page and a guest book if people really want to give an opinion (a woywwer with an opinion that would be a novelty? eh?)

  75. Congrats on being in Craft Stamper this month Julia- lots more visitors too! I agree about the word verification as well, its ok if the box is already there when you type your comment, its the ones that pop up after that make it longer to get round everyone. I've only ever had 2 spam comments- I got really stroppy in an e-mail to the company they were 'representing', and I've never had any more. I have some of those pallettes, they last forever, don't they.Have a great week, Shaz.
PS, I saw in the previous post you drive a Yaris- thats what my youngest son wants now he's passed his test.

  77. Not sure if it works that way, but is it possible to add the link to the post rather than the whole blog, as some of the challenges do. If that can happen, it would help to find the WOYWW post rather than having to search through a week's worth of posts. Just an idea and I have no idea if it is possible. You might think your desk is a mess, but it is clearer than mine usually is, and I love your mug. Have a good week and be careful with that huge van. xx Maggie

  88. I have a mug remarkably similar to that one! And I LOVE your old Pearl Ex palette! That is kind of awesome, actually. Thank for the guidelines. I know I'm guilty of not using WOYWW in my title, so I'll be sure to be consistent about that. I actually resisted turning of Word Verification for a long time, but I switched nearly a year ago and I am SO glad I did! I actually get more comments!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Thanks Julia. Those rules are simple and sensible. I turned word verification off about a year ago and have had no problem.

I don't have word veritication but I do check the comments before publishing for some reason I'm spammed nearly every day and I've had to stop anonymous comments for the same reason.

  95. Very busy desk this week Julia, your Pearl Ex palette looks well used and well loved. It's reminded me that I too have one of those hidden away in the depths of my studio......must dig it out for a bit of a play.

How you liking the white van??? My husband has a van, not a white one,a silver one but I still class him as a member of the white van club as he truly loves his van. When I changed my car recently,he said he would only swap his van for a newer van......nuff said!!

I agree about the word verification. I had a blog that didn't have it on and I suddenly started getting SPAM this week.

  98. Hi Julia,

Not linking in this week -- my desk is SPOTLESS! I have company coming so had to put all my supplies away :-(

Very good about the word verification. I couldn't write comments on at least a dozen blogs. I quit counting, actually.

Your desk looks cheery, especially the mug from LLJ!!

  103. Hi! Love the Pearl ex paint pallet, well used! The wooden stamps I see are very nice, really like that swirl! Have you moved the ladders yet? Cant see em this week, however I notice a lone garden fork growing out of the lawn? Was it hard to grow that? :) I agree you need a good tidy up on that desk!

  106. Hi Julia, good to see the 'rules' such as they are getting an airing again ... nothing worse that clicking a link just to find your whisked through to something that is not relevant. Not keen on the word verification - it plays havoc with my dyslexia - but not so averse that I won't leave a comment. I use comment moderation and have bloggers spam filter on and that works well for me.

I'm impressed that you can remember how long you've had those paints ... I'm so vague about that sort of thing. The card propped up at the back it lovely and you have one or two lovely stamps out too.

I can just see you zipping around in your white van ... but with all the loading/unloading you could be in danger of developing muscles like Arnie :)

  111. I don't know what one of those boards is but it looks wonderful to me. And a big hear hear (or is it here here?) to the rules, I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with it! I've changed my comments so that they're not embedded but I don't know if it helped anyone last week. I found out while I was changing that, that I had word verification on! I had no idea and I hate it so I turned it off. So far the spam has all gone in my spam folder but time will tell... And its not mess, its art sediment! ;-)

  112. Wow as always I look at the pic of your desk first and I thought 'oooo I like that patterned paper I wonder which supplier if from as I want one' lol, then I find you have done it yourself amazing. Its really weird as I was reading through an old craft stamper and saw an article for masterboard and got some stamps out ready to have a play (sometime this year lol). I agree with the rules, I haven't been managing to visit much over the last few weeks but before than it really infurated me to got to another woyww and find no desks, I like the ones that have pics of family or gardens or craft they are doing as they are telling us all what they are up to, but it's the ones that are selling or hosting something that not related to woyww, and I find myself strolling through pages trying to find what I think might be the woyww post. I have WV off, I don't mind it when I commenting upstairs on my pc, but if I'm on my phone or my tablet than sometimes your fingers miss and you end up with a WV thats wrong lol. Love the van post, so funny, I read it to my OH as he too used to drive a van and HGV's. Ok I know what I'm doing here, make a shorter woyww post just know but you've ended up with the longest comment ever, I can't ever seem to shut up lol lol. Kezzy xxx

  113. It can be a real drag when you have to put your foot down and have to stipulate the rules of participation. Luckily most of the people who post a link on your blog do the right thing...but well done for putting your foot down Julia.

  121. Hi Julia - oh you have a super fun desk to look at today (including that fun coffee cup!). Looks like some yard work has been going on outside too! Re: the word verification - Man, I've been spammed HUGELY in the past, so sadly I have to keep mine turned on. I agree it's a bit of a drag, but it definitely eliminated the spam problem I had (we get enough "enhancement" advertisements everywhere else - I didn't need them in my comments too! lol). *smiles* ~Jen

  125. Thanks for visiting my blog, Julia - I was feeling better, but now I'm rubbish again!! Hopefully I'll pick up in a day or two, as I want to get on, with lots of creative ideas buzzing round! My larger butterflies cut OK - it's just the small ones. I really need the detail blade for those - it's on my shopping list!! When I get more silver mirror card I'll be able to finish the project, and I think I will be able to use some of the rejects where the mistakes aren't too obvious.

That Scotch quick-dry glue can be got quite reasonably on the 3M website, as well as ATG glue guns and tapes. It's awesome stuff! PVA just doesn't hack it for me. I've got a pot of extra sticky PVA and it's turned into a horrendous gloopy lump in the bottle and won't work any more.

WOYWW is getting so big now that there's absolutely no hope of keeping up with it all!

Hope you have a great week, and thanks again for all you do for us.

  127. I'm so glad you like messy desks because mine seems to burp papers and a tornado blows through the work bench!

And how do you remember how long you have something? My goodness it must be a super hero power! Mine is to place objects in a safe place and to this day they are still safe. I hear squirrels do something similar.

    Nice to be here!

  129. I love those pearlex paints. I have four different palettes of them, because the lady from my local craft shop in UK used to demonstrate them at all the shows, so we used them in her workshops. I've had mine for at least eight years too!
I'd have an untidy work desk too if it wasn't for my two fluffy cats who live in this room. they keep me organised or we would not be able to live in peace in the same space.

  139. Tuesday at Noon and I have done all the desk! yeahhhhh It works much better if i keep to a routine and keep a list of where i have been I know very OCD of me, last week i didn't and just ramdomly clicked and got nowhere! anyway, 'white van Mrs D', looks like some gorgeous papers on your desk and some lovely stamps too, you have a very 'happy mug'. How do you get on with your ATG gun, everyone seems to love them and i invested in one with a adapter to use thinner tape but I don't like it - there I have said it! phew a weight of my shoulders, after spending a tiny fortune on the gun and loads of extra tape, i have just not got the hang of it so you won't see it on my desk as its been hidden (hanging head in shame!) should i give it another try, or just hide it in the cupboard and continue spending far to long trying to get the back off of DS tape! Hope you have a lovely weekend and find some time to craft. Take Care Lou xx

  143. First off--I think it worked! I've had lots less word verifications to muddle through, so kudos on that. Now then, now that I changed my comments to pop up, I don't see how I can reply to any of them? You got any good suggestions? Lousy ones? Anywho... I think your dog's passport photos are a book (sheet, whatever they call them these days) of stamps, on my address book with has a tan label on them (no moleskin, the hubby stole it all). And yes, my mini music stand is a stool. It swivels and goes up and down and doesn't appeal to cats. All bonuses!

Well I do have scraps that could last me till I die, but thought I'd give myself the 6 weeks time frame and see how it goes. I can always extend it, but it would feel like I'm losing if I made it for a long time and only did a month... Lots of psychology here BIG GRIN
