There's a large wall that holds back a few gardens and houses on Kennet Road in Tidworth.
It's plain and relatively uninteresting...until some very naughty person with a can of spray paint did this.  It really makes me smile, and I've found myself taking this route on purpose (which is currently an A338 diversion - the worst signposted diversion IN THE WORLD).  I could so easily go another, less round-the-houses way.
I realise that it's naughty because it's defacing the wall, but it could so easily have been a rude word or a rude picture, so it's not entirely mindless!  Is it there because the erm, 'artist' wants a short-cut around that wall - it's a good 500 metres from the bus stop to the first house...and uphill.  Or is it a sprayed by an idealist who thinks that the slightly smiley door can be a helpful reminder to those stepping off the bus that there's always another door to open?  I can't accept that it's just mindless grafitti - after all, why a door?! I want to think it's Narnia-esque - a nice reminder that even a brick wall has something worth investigating behind it.  It's telling us to take the time.
No wonder it makes me smile, I'm so busy looking for inspiration that I'm trying to read brick walls!

  2. It must really have made an impression on you if you took the time to take this photo! I like it too in its quirky way, if you read Harry Potter, to me it is a bit like the station platform 9 and 3/4

  4. I enjoyed that post ...defiate food for thought ...and yes ...why a door if there was not meaning behind it. I wish the 'artist'? could see what he/she started. lol

I was thinking the other day about how wide spread woyww has become ...maybe .... if we all register our county/state and country one week ..on the link possibly ... some one could mark every one off on a map ....for posterity ...maybe on the 3rd Aniversery ...just a random thought lol

  6. Now you have me intrigued too... let us know if you ever find out the why... until then we can continue making up reasons for it's existence. Which is super fun by the way. :)

  8. I love it, and if I lived near you, I'd show up at your door with several cans of paint on a late night to go "finish" what has already been started! :)

  11. Reminds me of those cartoon shows where they paint the door on a wall and then open it and walk through. Love it :)

  12. yay to the brick wall artist! There used to be a door in the wall where my parents used to keep their car, until the owner of the house on the other side, decided he didn't like people walking through his garden to get to their houses, (there was a path put right through his garden, so I guesshe had a point) In the end it was bricked up and the path on the other side, is now lawn... Have a great weekend

  13. Ha ha. I can't believe you actually stopped and took a photo you really are a true blogger!!!!

As you well know my house is just behind the wall so I see this everyday and I love it. The first time Bells and I saw this we really did laugh out loud. As you said it is so much better than the usual F off!!!

Good luck tonight packing for crop and enjoy your hours sat on the floor matching papers to photos. I will be there the painkillers are finally starting to work!! Just be warned I will probably high as a kite so I should not operate the oven, Cricut and Kettle. Oh and I will grab the milk. x x x x

  14. When I saw the picture I thought of an old childrens programme. Cant think what it was called, but it was about a little boy who climbed the ladder over a wall into a garden where all his drawings came alive. The song went something like "My name is Simon and the things I draw come true."

  20. This is too funny! All of us "artists" are fancying about what is behind the door. I feel sorry for all those mundanes who don't stop to take the time to "see" it or think about it. I'd keep detouring this way too, just to see if anything gets added! LOL!

  24. A smiling door would take me out of my normal way to run errands. This is a great way to get over those mojoless days. It's good you found it. It shows you are paying attention to life and art!

  25. Oh that's funny! Love the door - I'm with Latinacreativa, I'd show up with paint to go and do a trompe l'oeuil and make it look like a real door!

and I also think like Tracy - the TV programme was Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings, and the little boy drew things on a brick wall and when he climbed over, they came to life....

  26. LOL! ...and here I thought that you were going to go all Secret Garden with your post!... I guess a shortcut is better... have a great (albeit detoured) day!

  31. I want to smile/laugh at this but I know I shouldn't!!!! That so called art is against the law here but it makes me think that someone is trying to be an artist....I think! Glad it's not my brick wall!
