What’s On Your Workdesk? Wednesday 873

I’ve been doing a hurried, panic induced re-think of my contribution to the WI craft evening next week.
Last night I ‘trialled’ my plan on a couple of willing non card making members during our inaugural Craft evening. Sent me back to my desk really quick! I need to remember that using double sided tape and foam pads aren’t the norm for a lot of people, peeling them before sticking one side down is only obvious if you know. I need to remember that heat embossing is thrilling, needs explaining better than I did - I couldn’t convince them to stop heating once the powder turned shiny, they both thought it was then wet and needed to be heat dried. So long since I showed anybody that I’ve lost the patter! Also the water colour effect I’d used for the image took them an age to do, I think they were classically scared to overdo it or go outside the lines, something that won’t lend itself to 18 people having a go over two hours with other activities to try! Yikes. So I’ve been back to the drawing board and I THINK it’ll work better now. The panic is because I’m away on Friday for a scrapbooking weekend with The Coven and the diary between getting home and the WI evening is well, unforgiving!
Hope you have a super week, join us over at Sarah’s for a look see and/or a join in!

  1. Oh bless you. You have to remember not everyone is as clever as you. If you lived round the corner from me I’d be a very willing guinea pig…with very little idea of what to do lol

  2. Just as well you had a trial run then! I remember a card tutor coming to our WI and every time she came to our table she sighed…we didn’t mean to do it wrong but it got funnier as the session went on! Good tip re the card, my dad did that with a padded Christmas card for at least 25 years, it became a family tradition. I see what you mean about the rabbity bits, still not as funny as the elephant though…

  3. Good idea to have a trial run. Sometimes we forget that it’s easy when you know how, but not everyone knows how. Enjoy your crafting weekend. hugs Angela #12

  5. Excellent that you got to do a "mock" which enables you to sort stuff for the real thing. Hope you manage to get it done in time. Enjoy the scrapping - yet again I need to get back to mine. Hugs Bj#8

  6. You go girl!! Just share your joy! The newbies just need to have fun enough to be inspired to try it on their own! Then they are hooked! (spoken by a first class enabler!)
    Love you!

  8. It's easy to think that techniques you are familiar with and have used for so long are easy. When you're working with people who are not familiar with a techniques need time to practice them and generally one new technique is all they can manage at a time and be successful with them. I'm sure you will get there. Just keep it simple and they'll be back for more. Enjoy your scrapping too. Happy woyww, Angela x9x

  9. Good thinking to do a trial run with non-cardmakers! It's so easy to assume they know the simplest things that we know, but they don't! Have fun, and hopefully all the problems will be gone and everything will be fantastic! ❤️Lindart#14

  10. Good idea to have a trial run! It’s so easy to get hung up on a small thing when learning something new. Says I who usually gets hung upon a basic thing 😂

  11. That trial run sounds like a life-saver. I always forget that too. I am really bad about explaining in no-craft-smart language and assuming far too mush as given. But I also know you are a briliant teacher so expect you will get there in the end. It's a balancing act between making a nice card and really showing off amazing techniques. I agree with above - one nice fool-proof technique is enough! Happy post-WOYWW catch up!

  12. Oh, Julia, I just had a similar experience this morning. Trying what I thought was a simple Easter card and then realised that it would not be possible for some of the group. Back to the drawing board and hopefully have something everyone can enjoy making. Catriona

  13. Your post reminded me of an occasion when the library service decided we needed to gain something called ECDL - European Computer Driving License. (I know, cringeworthy). Essentially learning Office Suite. So training was arranged and on the first day, 30 of us or so were sitting in the shiny new IT suite when the trainer said ‘click on the icon and open word’.
I and my colleague next to me were both pretty it savvy. I turned to him and said - they didn’t really think about their audience did they?
Libraries at the time were not computerised. The room was full of people with blank faces. I thought it hysterical. Though these days it’s me with the blank faces, so much has changed.
I’m sure you’ve whittled it down and everything will go well. Have fun at the crop and how I hate those unforgiving spaces between events.

  16. Good luck with the WI. I may have to give a card making class in a couple of weeks - trying to think what I can make as examples!!
    Your desk is very tidy!
