What's On Your Workdesk? Wednesday 440

Bad light. But I can't let that stop play. In fact, I've decided that in daylight hours I will match and determine, and in the dark hours when my eyesight lets me down, I'll assemble and collate. Yes I have a daylight bulb in the lamp and it does help, but it's still not enough. I need a floodlight, I've decided!
I bought some new dies last week, so am having a play with them. The distress stains tell you how I coloured the cards you can see. At right, between glass mat and glasses is the handle, nut, washer and allen key from the broken bigshot. Cannibalised prior to disposal to help another damaged machine! Gotta love access to spares! The syringe at left is my silicone glue applicator (just in case you were thinking otherwise) and the slightly weird patterned piece of kraft card is a not very good attempt at some foil transfers. I had an idea and it didn't work. Will stick to their original use!
Show and tell then, will you, like what I have just done. Put WOYWW in your post title and link your blog here. Too easy!

  1. I had a go at an idea that didn't work quite how I thought it would yesterday, too... back to the drawing board! But at least I have (belatedly) made a start on Christmas.

I am with you on the daylight bulb not being enough to match colours by though. Rarely remember to use mine.

  2. Your desk is a tribute to Autumn, it is looking very brown with a touch of red and orange. For a little contrast we have some purple in the top corner. Sounds like I have been studying colour, or maybe I am thinking autumnal colours for something.
Sorry to hear about your Big Shot but at least it has managed to be a donor, is that thanks to you or Mr D?
    Hugs, Neet 2 xx

  3. Morning Julia. I too have ideas dotted about that simply didn't work how I hoped... but at least we tried!
    Take care. God bless.

  5. Morning Julia. My waste bin is home to several things I tried and didn't turn out right. It's all good fun though. I haven't quite got the hang of embossing, but I'll get there eventually. Have a lovely week, Heather #5

  8. Ahhh... recycled big Shots! Sorry that yours died but so great that you got the new one with virtually no interruption to the creative flow. Your desk looks great. Whatever the lighting, try not to get high on the silicone glue!

    Happy WOYWW,

  9. One good thing about something going wrong is definitely the supply of spare parts for later and of course the fact that it gives you an excuse to get a new one. I'm struggling with good lighting as well. At this time of year we really only get a few hours of daylight each day - or none at all depending on the weather! Enjoy your week, Julia!

  10. So many of you making Christmas cards...and I’ve not given it a thought yet. Wonder if I will find time to make mine this year? Keep up the good work my friend.

  11. Mm, dear Julia, mercifully poor lighting not so much of an issue downunder especially as summer is almost here..
managed to finally join again today been very intermittent this year .. but great to share when I can.
Loving your desk and die cuts coloured up there very pretty sounds like they're thanksgiving orientated with thankful word in use.. but guessing no..
Happy WOYWW Julia, glad you're crafting away not matter what the light or season!
Hugs prayers, Shaz in oz.x #4

  13. Hi Julia, it must be that time of the year as I've been having to rethink stuff lots this week. I've made about four Masterboards and only one made me happy Lol! Have a great and crafty WOYWW, Angela x14x

  14. What a busy and productive desk this week. I really like the foil medallion, I'm having a bit of a love affair with foil at the moment - it's being added to everything!
I don't know what I'd do without daylight bulbs - they are flipping marvelous now my eyes are older!
Hope you have a great week,

  15. Nice word dies, reminds me I need some more of those.....I have the same syringe so no unusual thoughts here. Very Christmassy I must say. I better go get dressed now - oops! BJ#17

  16. Hi, my first visit to the WOYWW community and I love it! So many different crafty projects on the go! A couple of friends who are WOYWWers (hi BJ#17!) have inspired me to have a go myself as I am finally getting the hang of this blogging lark lol.
I tried using a syringe once for my silicone glue. It ended up drying out! I cant wait to get back into my craft space and have full access to all my supplies (craft space in redecoration mode)

  17. One thing I do not do is play with new dies .... think my NYR will be 'Use as You Buy'!!!
I think I need two daylight bulbs - although I am on the sunnyside of the house, sometimes it can be quite dark inside.
But we must soldier on in the name of craft!!!
    Have a good week

  18. I like the 'cozy photo' you posted today Julia, the colors and atmosphere scream 'winter' and 'fireplace' and 'almost Christmas'... hope your day is nice and warm and the light is good. Happy woyww, big hug from Holland, Marit #19

  19. Hi Julia! Finally got back to posting! I see you are also into Christmas cards - I do love your ideas and wish I could come to one of your workshops - maybe next year when I get over this knee stuff!
    Love and hugs,

  20. Hi Julia, here I am, not so late this week! I recognised the syringe immediately for what it is. Mine is bunged up with dried gel and no amount of poking about has cleared it so I will have to invest in a new one. The new dies look very useful, as do the spare parts for the die-cutting machine. Have a wonderful week. Hugs, Elizabeth x #22

  21. Hi Julia,Good job on cannibalising for spares. Always worthwhile. With the foil transfer- try ironing it, I found that that helped it stick to both glue & stencil paste. Just put it between a folded sheet of copy paper first, lol. I have to admit, crafting is probably the only workout my iron ever gets!I picked up the use of a syringe for silicone glue off you, brilliant idea. Love & Hugs, Shaz, #10 XxX

  22. The lack of daylight is definitely an issue these days - I had to buy a daylight magnifier to finish a cross stitch on black linen - a daylight bulb sounds like a good idea - it might have avoided a purple cat (thought I was using grey!!)

  23. Hello Julia. I'm late today but made it. Glad to see my friend Karen - has finally succumbed to WOYWW :-) . Yes light is an issue for me. My dining room was designed - surprisingly for dining with more subtle lighting, it is proving tricky with my ladies on these darker days. Anne x #26

  24. I'm late today too as I'm up to my neck with school work. At least I can work on my data from home and don't have to traipse into school for the Twilight session. I've had some OOPS this week too. Sometimes you just have to learn by experimenting. Happy WOYWW Sarah #27

  25. Such a fun desk. Loving your cards and all the great little things you are working with. I totally agree on the light. I never knew how bad mine was until I added the painting table underneath an awesome overhead. I've no windows to speak of, but with no sunshine it wouldn't help. 2 years ago I replaced my big shot with another. He too said not salvageable and no hesitation pitched it. I smile and sometimes rebell, he can throw my things so easily. But my tour around the outside buildings shows he hoards away all his broken bits and bobs also. So now I have some defense. He uses his with his off time metal creations. So I don't complain, but He doesn't notice when I use mine. Have a wonderful day and thanks for sharing.

  26. Happy WOYWW. I am having to turn on my daylight desk lamp almost every day now. Unfortunately currently it is on my desk where my pc is. I need to get it moved, so it points to my 'messy craft' table, which is where it is really needed - or buy another one! Ali x #28

  27. Good to try new things. Otherwise you won't know if they WILL work. On to the next 'what if'. LOL Your desk is much tidier than mine this week. How did that happen?! Creative Blessings! Kelly #29

  28. I know exactly what you mean about the daylight lamp. Do you think we could fit the sun with a daylight light bulb?! Glad to see that you are managing to get some crafting done though and are still experimenting x

  29. Great idea to get spare parts from the old machine! Now you are prepared! The syringe does look kind of weird, good thing it's only glue! You look like you are having a lot of fun with your new dies, looking forward to seeing what you do with them! Have a great week! Lindart #34

  30. Hi Julia, Ooh I take it you guys are off daylight savings time too. ( I just really hate that coming home in the dark thing) they should just move all the clocks to that spring forward time and leave them alone. ( ok rant over) and yes, I have 3 Ott lights over my table so that I can "almost" see, but I don't feel like I can see colors properly after dark even with all the lights on so I don't.
I am doing last minute booth stuff and making my self crazier than normal :) Love all the words you have cut up. ~Stacy #35

  31. I know what you mean when it comes to lighting. I have a daylight bulb in the lamp by my sofa but it still isn't enough for sewing or working with certain colours...can't beat a bit of good sunshine.

  32. Your desk is quite tidy and efficient looking. I finally bought a new daylignt light...does seem better than the old one, but true, nothing beats true sunlight. Have a great week.

  33. The real clincher with gathering spare parts is to remember that special place you put them. You will never need them while left out on your desk

  34. Decided to just jump in this week and if you see something I typed wrong or said that is wrong let me know. I really am having problems with words right now. I quadruple check everything I say and type right now. Your desk looks busy! I hope mine will start to be I have trotted enough stuff out to try and make some cards. Have a great week. Vickie #38

  35. Our daylight is getting shorter and shorter, too. Love my OTT light as I can't see without it especially as it seems more dark than light now. That's the first time I seen a silicone glue syringe. Looks interesting. Anyway, a nice busy desk. Well, back to getting ready for an Open House. Have a great week!

  36. Julia, you were too funny about the syringe!! I was sorry to hear about your Big Shot, may it RIP! LOL Got to love the spare parts though! LOL Everything has a use! Love how you always have a story about your desk! Mine is just plain a mess, but yours talks! LOL Blessings, Felicia #39

  37. I use a daylight bulb as here in SPain the low voltage of electricity makes working in the evenings difficult. Love the spares - a good crafter never throws anything away. Looking at the syringe made me laugh at what is on my desk sometimes when crafting. Looks a little like the contents of the bathroom, make up sponges, shaving foam, nail polish remover, you know what I mean. Anickoana
