What's On Your Workdesk? Wednesday 136

Well, mine feels relatively unchanged to be honest.  And acts as proof that if you pile enough stuff on it, you can use the stuff as a work surface without any problem!  So I've wrapped up a couple of bits for posting and used the marker and ruler to draw some charts for Mr Dunnit...and spent a few quiet minutes cleaning off a stamp or two - Stazon cleaner at right.  And cleaned off my scissors...at left.  And made no decisions about the apparent 'pile' at the back..yet.  All this on top of the Really Useful Box I collected yesterday.  This is the clear stamp storage.  It's deep enough to hold loads...it's shallow enough to fit where it's going and it's the best I can do...laminated sleeves neatly loaded with stamps and stored in file sleeves just doesn't work for me.  Renders them inaccessible and renders me absolutely pathetic when it comes to putting them away.  I'd rather rummage through a box!  So I'm going to deliberately STAIN each image with black Stazon (so I can see what it is!!) and then chuck 'em in the box...you can't say the style doesn't suit me.  We all know that would just be kind words..really, and I know 96% of you are horrified by this as an solution.  It's OK though, cos I'm in the 4%!

Go on then, spill. What's going on at your workspace this week.  Put WOYWW in the title and link your Wednesday desk photo here.  The visiting will be slow, but visits you will get...it doesn't matter if you link at No1 or No 150, promise!  No blatant advertising please!

Happy WOYWW to you Julia! It looks like your desk is getting much use in the new year! I have those same plasic boxes but mine have wide open spaces inside - wonderful for storing whatever I can fit into them! :-)

I'm not horrified at all, I'm in the same 4%.

Ho ho an i-pad on top of a really useful box. The boxes are my absolute favourite. Not sure about Stazon on clear stamps though...

Any flat surface can become a workspace! I like your idea for storing stamps (shhh...don't tell the 96%), my wooden mounted ones are in a big box like that!

Bleubeard and Elizabeth said...

I used to be in that 96%, but I am now in the 4% who totally agree with you. After I tried to clean some clear stamps at Christmas, I realized they don't clean completely, anyway, so why not make sure you can SEE what you want to stamp. However, some people suggested that Staz-on, if left on your stamps, did something bad to the stamps. Be prepared to read that from at least someone today!

I'm just thrilled to be back and loving every second of it.

VonnyK said...

I'm with you Julia. My room looks neat but you should see the pile behind me. The only way to find anything is to rummage and that way you find more things you had forgotten about. You wouldn't get that in neat folders.
Have a great week, I'm sitting on the patio with the laptop in 36C deg heat, going back in the pool in a minute.

Thats a good idea to stain your UMs with stazon so you can see it, obviously you dont use light colours inks LOL. I agree stuff stashed up is easier to find than a clean desk

I am most definitely fond of piling! I found this acrylic box and used it for a while until it found its way on the botom of a very fat pile and I couldn't use the stuff inside it easily anymore! Happy WOYWW!

I am definitely a "put them in a box" type of storage. Not sure about the stazon and clear stamp, will be interesting to hear what others comment. I do like that i-pad.

I think your storage solution is great and may have to pinch that idea! I have made plastic sleeved books for my clear stamps and now I forget that I actually have any so I think I am in your 4% as I need to be able to see stuff to use it!!

I like the box..I've several all for different things. Someone told me they take a plain paper, stamp the stamps on it and tape it to the box and then they know what's inside. Maybe would save me from buying duplicates too.
Next sale time I might buy 1 for each holiday too.
12x12 papers fit inside also and they stack great.
Have fun Enjoy WOYWW

I am almost with in the 4%, I certainly can't do binders and store mine in a box, it's just the stazon bit I have problems with, though it would help, a lot! Maybe I will try it but in a different colour :-)

My desk was fairly stable this week too. I do have plastic holders like this that I store holiday stamps like Christmas, Halloween, Easter...so much easier to find them or specific embellies! Contained Clutter LOL!

Oh blimey I am inthe 96%, and scrub my stamps and am a bit weird and like them to look clean , even tough I know the ink does no damage....we all have ourweird little ways,!!don't get them all clean by the way and soon chill about it! Happy woyww hugs trace x

Right, beginning to feel like the world is back to normal after Christmas, New Year and Now Back to School. I hear so many echoes of my own situation in your posts Julia - am hopeless if things aren't accessible and terrible at putting things away. I have to stop every few days because it gets intolerable. Word of advice though - that box might work as an extra work top now but once you've put the stamps in you will ALWAYS want to get to it if it's under your current piece of work (been there, got the T shirt....)

I love your organizational idea for the stamps. If there weren't so darn many laws here in the states regarding copyright etc I would do it that way to. Angel laws I think they call them! Hi This is the first time I am joining in with WOYWW, stumbled across it last week and have been hooked ever since. Im still having trouble finding storage solutions got all my craft stuff so great seeing how others do it. x

l00pyscraftcreations said...

Oh I'm the 4% crew!!, rummaging is so much better!! And the storage box, well I have shed loads, all filled to the brim, disorganised as well, though I have made a start labeling each box, but really I need my dad to pull his finger out and finish my Craft desk for me!!

PaperArtsy said...

Just chatting about stamp storage here yesterday too, and decision was shallow shelves on the wall...but being crafty in a portacabin, am pretty sure every time I open/close the door the whole lot would fall off said wall domino styley...still scratching my head and using boxes/drawers for now!

Unknown said...

Julia! It's a hoot that you're using the box as an actual workspace. But it's true. All kinds of things can be used to work on. I always refer to the finding things (meaning where to specifically look to find things) as whatever 'layer' it would be found in. So the first layer is stuff that was placed 1-2 days ago and the second layer say 4 days ago and 3 layers down more than a week. This is the 'jargon' I use with my daughter. So if I'm finding something for her in her studio she will say (for example) "mom, it's on the 2nd shelf in the stack of colored papers at about layer three." That way I know exactly where to look. This works very well for us. I like your solution to what works for you in terms of storing stamps. *smiles* Norma

Kim Dellow said...

LOL! Storage! The perennial problem! I use the really useful boxes too and they live up to their name. Problem is I keep filling them up and now I need somewhere to put them! Perhaps a really large really useful box, one the size of a craft room LOL! Kimx

Dear Queen of WOYWW and Trends, well first of all Julia - how are the toothy pegs of last weeks WOYWW? hope and pray all on mend, am on antibiotic for mine.
Now I personally think your method of storing unmounted stamps is absolutely brilliant and would probably adopt it except a lot of mine are not clear, but rubber ez-mount and so when upside down would all look the same...thanks for sharing and putting the idea out there. Happy WOYWW! Shaz in Oz.x. #30

Am still in the 4% with you here Julia - one bit would like to be much more organised, the other bit looks at the load of stamps to tackle if I go for filing and thinks 'Sheesh, that would take a load of valuable crafting time to do'!! Happy WOYWW! Di xx

I like a good rummage, especially when there are stamps involved. Try to organise mine as I have so many and have tried ring-binders, folders, index sheets -the lot - but end up throwing them into one of my Really Useful Boxes. If ever a product was well-named then these are they. My problem is I have so many of the boxes (7 of the smaller than shoe-box size for stamps alone) that I need to organise those as well.

I'm on the fence on this one.... I love the RUBS, I have all my papers and cardstock etc in them, lots of them! I have my stamps on my Expedit, in a wicker basket so I don't have to make sure things fit but the lid still closes! The UMs are on their bits of acetate mostly. Do they not stick together other wise? Let me know, it might help me! See you next week ;-)

I love those boxes, I have 34 of them holding different types of craft. I am definitely in the 96% and like mine laminated in files, but it's whats best for you. Sometimes I look at storage solutions on blogs, but when I have a go it doesn't tend to work for me, so I have resigned to the fact that doing my own thing is best lol. I agree with your working on stash, it's quite easy to craft on top of craft, I do it all the time lol. Kezzy x

would it surprise you to know I'm in the 4% and my unmounteds stamps are spread about my room, some in folders, some in drawers, this is why I still prefer wood mounts - they are a decoration to the room in and of themselves, objects d;art; unmounted seem somehow unfinished and unattractive? but of course undeniably cheaper to manufacture and therefore more commercially viable, and we now pay as much for them as we once did for wood, God I'm in a foul mood.....i probably need a damn good mounting (where is the Mr D when one needs him?)

Trish Latimer said...

I LOVE Really Useful Boxes, i have lots!!!
I hate having stamps were you can't see them, I'm lucky enough to have a whole wall of shelves where my mounted stamps live, and despite the thousands of unmounteds i also have, you can guarantee its a mounted image I will use most of the time. Simply because I can see it without rumaging around in the unmounted files!

Oh the never ending what to do with unmounted clear stamps - I keep them in their original packaging and the other day I got so frustrated when pushing them in a box I cut off the half of the packaging....I would honestly go mad if I had dirty stamps but I guess that is the only solution for clear ones...I honestly buy less and less these days - rubber and wood is my forte!
Love your posts - always gets us thinking about solutions!

Finally made it again :)

You know me and my stamps Julia, all neatly put into ring binders and filed on a shelf! But I know this is not for everyone, in fact I am the only person I know who does it! I knew I had to have a tidy streak in me somewhere, I just keep it VERY well smothered :)

I love RUBs and have several of them. Most of my clear stamps are in a tall A4 one and that works for me :o)

lisa said...

If the "just chuck it in" system works for you, go for it, Julia. It doesn't matter how you store them as long as you can find them when you need them. I like that system for most things but it has to be ringbinders for my stamps, I get so frustrated if I can't lay my hands on them straight away and that's not a pretty sight I can assure you.

Julia, you are my kinda lady when it comes to storage solutions ;) That's exactly what I do with my stamps - wasn't bright enough to think of staining them but lobbed in an RUB they are. My most favourite and most used ones are in a little carry case (that once held make-up, that was evicted sharpish) and they are kept in my drawer under my desk. The rest are on the shelves in that RUB. Does the job.

MaggieC (Silvercrafter) said...

Julia, I cannot work out how you manage to visit everyone and still get work and crafting done. You are definitely a Superwoman. I can't wait to see how your new stamp storage works for you. Mine are in a mix of storage. Some in plastic sleeves, some in their original packets in a drawer, and the Clarity ones in a drawer and two Really Useful boxes. I think I am still sitting on the fence, waiting to find the "perfect" solution. xx Maggie #105 (at the moment)

While I'm in the 4% for doing that with my embelishments; and have used dumping it out as a creative block-breaker...I have to say, I'd probably never use a stamp from there...probably also why shopping at clearance racks drives me nuts, while my sister-in-law comes home with $3 jeans!

Hi Julia, All that stamp and scissor cleaning sounds very industrious ... and you have a solution for your clear stamps too. Your really useful box looks the ideal solution. I so love your desk, it makes me smile - so much stuff!! I've got my clear stamps in boxes too but also some in trays and some in a folder. The stamps in the folder I tend to forget about so not such a good idea for me! Thank you for your nice comments on my blog and for visiting my empty desk xx

I'm in that 4% with you, as you know, but it will be a higher percentage methinks if you did a secret poll! I think folks like to pretend they clean their stamps and organise them but methinks NAH! They don't really do it.

It's me again...a day late and a dollor short! One of these days I'm going to get my act together, but I'd probably forget where I put it! I guess I'm a 4% gal, sounds like a perfect solution to me! I guess I should quit blabbing and get off to Weight Watchers. I've been good all week, well pretty good, ok, I did have that one good day! See you next week! Maybe actually on time! Have a terrific week!

Well, storage is storage and if it works for you that's perfect. I seem to think I've achieved perfection in my room then a year later I have to move it around again, might help if I stopped buying stuff I suppose!!

Hello and lovely to have a good browse on your blog....I've come via Shaz, my new publicity agent from far away!! I of the stacked pizza boxes! However I have really enjoyed my last 20 mins browsing...gosh I chuckled all the way through - thanks for the entertainment....did you ever think of doing a one woman comedy show? Makes for great reading. Wish I had time to look at the desks but it's time to join Mr Crafty Quills in bed! Like you I may not sleep for hours but as we have no one calling early in the morning I won't get up too quickly!
Nice to read you - Best Wishes from Northern Ireland.

I've tried different systems for storing UM stamps and still haven't settled on the best way. Those that are in sets on sheets are kept upright in a box, so I can flip through, but it's all the odd little ones that are a problem - I've got several boxes and little crates for different categories, but still forget what's in each and some stamps don't fit into the categories or they could go in one of several places ... I wish someone would come up with a solution. Another love of RUBoxes here. x

Julia Sweetness I can't believe I checked in early for WOYWW and somehow didn't hit enter on my comment to you. I scanned the 123 comments twice thinking maybe I did but no, the window is still open on my desk...LOL. Thank you for another wonderful WOYWW!

Everybody but me seems into stamps - I have about 5!!! But I have about 200 cookie cutters and they are all piled in plastic drawers in the botton of my so called dish cupboard (more junk than china!).

But still I have to laugh! I saw the cat flattener episode of hoarders too!

Just catching up on the WOYWW hopping, 60 down, 100 to go. Cor Blimey...Did you put something in the water this week...?!! I'm contemplating switching to buckets for storage because however much I tidy up when you need to find a certain stamp during a mad session, it always ends up with a rummaging, flinging, faffing and falling off episode... might as well start and finish with a pile!

Now Julia - after your comment on my blog I am wondering what on earth the "idea" is. You have me intrigued. Will have to keep a look out.

I wish I'd thought to photocopy the pictures before I cut them out so I could have made you a bird shooting card. Sorry I didn't do that
